Hot Rods 57 FORD Build #2... Glutton for Punishment.

    Well. I needed the PCV basket and such for this engine.... You can buy them..about $130 US... then the dollar exchange, dreadful shipping costs and then the import duties... I was looking at about $300 in total for this small piece.
    That just wasn't gonna happen.
    After my lamenting to Terry... we decided to just make one...
    He needed one for his 427,.. so...
    he came back to my shop with a unit complete for $20 bucks.

    Just partial pics.. but the basket was completed and matched an original... completed with slotted holes... (yes... the basket has a base with small holes drilled)... the top was made like an original he had and after a simple gasket was cut.. it was done.
    Another thing off the list.

    Moving on to the Clutch Master..... we are making up an inner reinforcement plate..... surrounded by a cage type deal that will tie into the OG brake/Clutch bracket... I have no pics of this yet... but when completed I will up date.
    Unfortunately .... there is just no way to hide the master in the car at this point..... just not enough real estate ...
    Been playing with clutch pedal ratio and lined up the master and pedal in a perfect forward push.... no angle whatsoever.
    We are committed now.......

  6. Just gotta ask , why didnt you use a dual master cylinder ?? If staying with the single ,could have used the double master with one side for brakes ,other side for clutch slave .

    Yea.. he sure is..... a very talented guy that Terry,... A great teacher and explains everything, puts up with my most stupid and annoying questions.
    In this hobby,. there are a ton of scandalous individuals that have no scruples and are nothing but sharks.
    He is not that type of person.

    Because I'm a cheap.... and I had a good master in stock. hahahah.
    On the other 57 I did use a 67-70 Ford master.... and around here at this time.. they have doubled in cost since I bought the last one.

    Parts have just increased so much in the last 3 years. it ridiculous.....

    I know the singles work just fine
    2 of my cars still use them .
    Alway's good to have somebody honest and knowledgable to help out .
     
  11. Once I had my new master/clutch master plate made up I still had to get the clutch master situated a lot better. I made up a riser block to make more room for the pedal rod inside the car since I used heim joints.

    The clutch master I originally had up higher but dropped it down to get it the rod straighter. A slight angle can be tolerated. I had originally dropped the pedal rod lower on the pedal arm, no good. I lost too much leverage. I would up using the factory hole in the arm.

    I really only needed about 3/4" of clutch fork travel to make everything work, took us about 3 weekends and a lot of made-up parts went into the scrap heap.

    So the clutch master is mocked up and working very well.
    A inside cage plate was made with added spacers to fill the faculty creased areas... about 1/4 inch in depth.
    The cage made also ties into the Factory Master/brake/clutch Big Bracket.There is zero flex.
    The pedal ratio is 5:1 and the Tilton calls for a ratio between 4:1-7:1... so we are good.
    Travel on the rod is about 3/4 of an inch... we are good on that level.
    The pushrod on the master travels perfectly back n forth.. no downward travel no upward travel.
    Just a fluid straight shot.

    One thing I would advise.. is on these pedal set ups.. there is a very DELICATE plastic bushing that is in the clutch/Brake assembly(from the factory)
    Be ULTRA careful replacing this or using one from an extra pedal assembly you have.... I destroyed 3 because of age and the fragility.Takes a lot of lubricant to remove or install.I got lucky on the fourth and last one I had....
    No sure of a replacement part# on these.... but... they must be common.. I can't see Ford have 10 different ones in the late 50's..... I have a sneaking suspicion that it was a universal part in Ford inventory.
    What that is... no idea...... yet.

    Need to pull it apart and give a shot of paint....

    Next step is to finish the throttle linkage with the heim joints and thread a small piece of rod with 1/4 fine thread... after that... pre assemble the sheet metal and start some wiring.
    I have found out that my other 57 will be coming home from the Paint shop within the next 30 days...

    Man..I gotta hit the gas.

    Honestly I wouldn't have a clue that clutch/brake setup wasn't factory if they were similar in color or tone...but I'm not really a guru on such things...especially at 60 mph with the hood down...:D

  15. I used a set of Mr. Gasket throttle ends that were 1/4-28 male threads. The rod I made from either 5/16" or 3/8" aluminum round stock. Just drilled and tapped the aluminum stock to accept the end pieces.

  16. Is the stock throttle linkage not compatible with an FE? also, I've heard about cable throttles, what are your thoughts on those?

    Oh no......... I just did not have any stock linkage.... So I was making my own.

    Looks solidly engineered, and I like the attitude of "whatever is around is getting used". If it really bugs you later it'd be easy to grind the lettering off the sides of that casting and sand the letters off of the plastic lid.

    My 428 car is the priority.I have received word it should be back in my hands by end of May or early June.
    I have pushed pretty hard on the B/W car. and was hoping to have it yard drive by June.... I have completed quite a bit since starting last October in the fall.But the Black car is my true main goal.

    Naw,.... I hear you though,... but its not a detail that I am so concerned with.
    Yes,. I really am trying to use all the parts I have here.I admit ,.. even with the parts I have... and the scrappy build,.... this hobby is getting so expensive.I enjoy working in the shop in the winter months.. but in the summer... I would rather be using them.

    Hahahah John, The black car still needs some massaging on the front sheetmetal,.. to be honest,.. I am gonna drive it in a Semi gloss epoxy for a few years.... the cost of materials on the bodywork end have jumped up about 300% around here. I simply don't have the space or place to do any type of paint/bodywork here at my place... and more importantly.. the skill.
    A man must know his limitations.
    Both of these cars were bought pretty cheap.... at a time when you could do so.
    Now... not so much.

  26. My '59 was a west coast car and cheap, although missing lots of stuff I had to dredge up. I made lots of items for it in the process and had some good help along the way.

    Yes and Yes!
    Both 57's I have were born in the Dallas plant, The B/W one lived its all its life in Texas... albeit a hard life.... but the environment and climate helped its survival.To be honest.. it was the better car to start with.
    The black car was moved to the north at sometime during its life and I found it here on the classifieds and had all the problems of a Northern car. Replaced nearly everything... Like you.. both needed attention and I have had some exceptional help from good friends and complete strangers along the way.I have really enjoyed working on both... waaaay better than any early Ford I have owned.... I can't really say why.... but I just enjoy them a lot.
     
  28. Both cars will definitely be cool when done. I am like you and enjoy both working on them as well as driving them. I really need to take my 56 apart and do several things to it. But, I also hate to be without it since I like driving it so much. I actually lost second gear in my Fordomatic recently...but, still drove it about 800 miles without it over this past weekend. :oops: That was only because my kids Edsel needed a few too many things fixed to get it all done in a Thursday night before leaving early Friday. :D
