Installing new cam/lifter/oil pump/intake etc, etc. I don't remember ever seeing this part, nor for the life of me can I find a spot for it. It has oil on it, like it came from inside the case. Fits around the crank, bit only a little before the key stops it. I noticed ot when I knocked the fuel pump off the Frame on accident, but can't confirm that's where it came from. 1st small bock chevy I've been in, if you can believe that. Always been in fords and buicks. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Damned if I know. The closest thing I can think of is maybe part of front seal from the timing cover, but then again, probably not. Other than that, I don’t recognize this as a SBC part.
Yep, that's it. I was using air to keep the valves up and launched a few parts to the old springs being in a speedy mode. I always get nervous when they are floating on air. THANKS!
Looks like an old speedy sleeve for a harmonic balancer. I could be wrong? But I don’t think so. Is there a big or deep groove where the seal rides on the balancer? If so that’s what it is.
I'm thinking valve spring shield, as you sprung a bunch of the parts loose doing seals. Speedi-sleeve is very thin and a press fit to balancer, so odd it would come off, but you never know.
That is the OIL SLINGER .I saw them up to 59 or60?. covered the timing cover seal. Never saw one on a 327. In 61 they changed the rear main seal, valve cover bolts and 62 PCV system. Things were progressing . Pete.
I made the pic big for ya, always select "full image" when posting pics.. I am in the valve spring cap camp... it is too thick to be a repair sleeve, and it is not an oil slinger, an oil slinger looks like this
On further review..I know head out of ass, I'm now changing my opinion to valve spring retainer cap. If right, should be easy for the OP to compare with the other 15.
Without them on the valve spring with the little square oring on the valve under the keepers won’t do much… your engine will smoke like a lit wet log in a fireplace…PC seals will cure all of that..
Yea, Alex I’d like to change my answer for $200 please. Got excited (confused) when he said it fit on crank. Sorry.
So I need to take the springs off again, cut off the square o ring and put on seals is what you're telling me?
I'd have to believe you read him correctly, you can run the good umbrella seals without those shields but not the O ring seals. You may or may not be able to remove the seals and get them back on without tearing them up but an O ring pick set might help.
SBC’s needed the upper metal umbrellas to work with the square o-rings. I don’t know if any replacement valves even have the second groove for them anymore. GM actually had a fix for the early SBC’s the line mechanics could do on the car. They had an rubber umbrella seal that could fit over the stock guide boss and grip it. They still sell them today but advise they were good for .400” lift on the valve. No machining was necessary. I even have some. Today you can buy the tool from the big box stores to machine the guide yourself and install the Viton seals but the heads need to be off. I just did a Ford Y-Block set of heads. Huge difference….
I'm gunna run the factory set up on this one I think and put the upper umbrellas back on. The motor is pretty tired I think. I'll drive it nice this summer and rebuild it this winter. Thanks for the info, I'll get it lined up to upgrade with those when I pull the heads and get everything to the machine shop.
