Customs Early Customs with bumper Swaps!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rocket's Hot Rod Garage, Apr 26, 2022.

  1. I really dig the early style customs & especially some of the interesting bumper choices. So lets see some early style customs with different bumpers. Especially '33-'38! Tell us what they are if you know....

My '41 Cadillac convertible had the center of the original bumper removed and the center of a '49 Buick rear bumper worked into place, so the license plate would be recessed into the bumper. There are guards which were cut down custom to cover up the seams. It looks a lot smoother with the guards in place. Then the trunk was shaved. Unfortunately I don't have any good pics of the car with the guards on, all I have currently is a pic when I found the car and one I took while I was halfway through buffing the old paint out.

Wisconsin allows for year of manufacture plates now, I'm thinking about getting one for this, and making a gl***/plexigl*** cover to fit in the opening, the way some custom guys used to recess the plate into the trunklid and then cover it.

It's funny how a simple swap can make a car look great.

Here’s my old 36 phaeton with Desoto bumpers and my “41” with 47 Ford bumpers 48AAA5F9-AB58-4738-99E0-C76973819160.png B86BD45D-67FD-42F7-AEFD-FCD107D0CC0C.png

I've made a good chunk of change over the years buying (low) and selling (high) 37 Desoto, 40 Olds, and other cool old bumpers. Never had a custom I wanted to put them on. But I now have a 40 Ford that will have a custom flair, even if it doesn't wear skirts. I have 40 Merc bumpers and 41 Ford bumpers in the warehouse just in case.

  16. I really love '40s with '47-'48 bumpers. Much like Bruce's '41 nosed car above.

I ****ed up a couple years ago and could have bought some 37 DeSoto bumpers at BobK's estate sale but I let them go and always regretted it. Not sure what I'd use them on but they don't turn up very often and they sure would have been cool to have. They sure look nice on F-head's car above.

I doubt there are many 37 Desotos left, but most all their bumpers have survived.

Just gotta say, your Cadillac blows me away. My grandpa had a 41 Coupe for many years, and my dad had 2 41 sixty-specials over the years.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I always wanted a custom from the very early days, and this fits the bill, even if the custom touches were overall very mild.

It was bothering me that I don't have a picture with the guards so I walked out into the garage and put the bumper back together for a picture. The bumper got a dent in the license frame area at one time so now it sits a little wonky but whoever did this originally did a really beautiful job, the guards fit like factory and really make it look like the Buick center section is supposed to be there.

That bumper is really trick! And not too difficult either, I see how the guards hide the seams of the middle section/cad bumper. Ingenious.

Please keep these coming, I have a 1936 Ford and I'm in the process of switching out my bumper for? That I havent decided, I did buy some 1940 Ford bumpers where the bolts were welded to the bumper and the bumper is flush now. I would love to buy some Zephyr or Desoto bumpers, so I'm trying to save up for some.

  27. Some more examples with LZ bumpers.

Some great looking cars already posted.

I have a thing for '41 Ford bumpers. My Phaeton has Chevy Bumper guards front and back on it's, 5 window has nothing up front and an unknown/aftermarket bumper guard on the rear.

I'm looking for another pair of nice/at least driver-quality 41 Ford bumpers as well if anyone has a pair they don't need..

Yes, I liked those 41 bumpers on Chris' car so much I asked him if he had an extra set I could buy. He did and they are since re-chromed and going on my 41 PU.
