Howdy all, been working through a banger project and want to change out the diff oil but dont have access to 600W here in Japan. I only need it for the diff as have a later gearbox. Been trying to find an alternative that I can source locally. Any suggestions on what I can look for would be greatly appreciated.

600W is an old Mobil oil spec for Steam Engines, it is what Henry specified for gearbox and rear end, AND steering box, but , it's not 600 weight oil as you would expect. In fact the W in modern multigrade SAE oils is for winter not weight as is commonly thought.
Specs have changed somewhat since the 20s/30s. AFAIK Mobil still sells it .
There have been many discussions on Fordbarn, AACA etc e.g
    https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73472

All of the Model A suppliers sell modern SAE 250 oil and mark it as 600W. About $US10 a quart.
Penrite in Aus sells TRANSOIL 250 and rates it as as a 600w equivalent. Get someone in Aus to buy you some from Repco!
I use Redline Heavy Shockproof Gear Oil. It works for me and never causes any problems. Some people say to mix it with another Redline oil...?Don't know why. Apparently Lucas Oils also have an equivalent too.

I've been using 120-140 gear oil in my Model A's for 15 years. Plenty of lubrication in such lightly loaded gear boxes and it stays in.

Thanks @97 but want to buy locally as freight is expensive and taking a long time.

Im a tad comfused as reading in some places SAE 250 and others 120-140.

@fabber is that straight straight 120 or 140 as Im seeing a lot of 80W-140?

Apparently hypoid oils foam and slide off the gears when you use them on straight cut gears. According to the info I have read, the old 600W is sticky . I suggest a search on Ford Barn and maybe try "Bobistheoilguy.com" it is a forum about oil. Surely Redline oil is available in Japan!

This is a bit weird - I am certain I put a post in the April meet, others found the May meet, but I cannot find my post from Sunday.

You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Banger Zone!

Sure as long as you know that I admit I totally plagiarized everything except "Banger" from an ancient Twilight Zone intro!
