Without looking up any numbers, looks like a 10 bolt GM car rear end with 2.56 gears in it. I’m sure someone else can identify further.

Yep, it looks like a twin brother to the rear end under my El Camino.

Yep, 10 bolt GM. There are more of those around than there are plastic grocery bags.

By the way, welcome to the H.A.M.B. Wes.baker . Lets see a photo or two of those 3100's.

Is it a 8.2 or 8.5. I know the best way to know is to measure ring gear obviously but I’m trying to avoid pulling cover back off because when I had it off previously I wasn’t planning on changing gear ratio so didn’t measure it.

Yea I’ve done research before posting and was curious if was a 8.2 or 8.5. Sorry should have been more specific from beginning haha

Considering this rearend is in your AD pickup, I am going to guess it is out of a Camaro since that is a pretty common swap. And, I believe that the date code would say it is a 77 Camaro which would make it an 8.5. Someone that knows this stuff better than me can correct me, but that is my somewhat educated guess.

Oh, and cool truck, but the wheels are off topic here on the HAMB, so might want to post a pic from an angle that doesn't show them or it will get deleted.

    I'm gonna go against the grain and say it's a '67 8.2" 10 bolt. :D
No idea what the original application was, though.

Appears to me the axle perches for leaf spring have been moved and I cleaned axle off and cannot find a tube number where they are always at which would make it easy to identify.

That would be another sign to me that it may be a 77 and not 67. I am putting a 69 rearend in my sons 51, and appears it will bolt right in without moving the spring perches. The only reason I guessed 77 the first time was more based on how the date code was coded. I thought the 60’s date codes started with a letter. All somewhat guesses on my part...

If it had leaf spring mounts it was in an F or X body vehicle, more than likely. I'm seeing L217 for a casting date, maybe I need more coffee, it's still kinda' early. :D;)

It sure looks like an 8.2..8.5 has a smooth round cover, was first used around 1970......8.2 will be ok with 300 hp ....There are guys using 8.5 10 bolts in 11 second cars with slicks ,auto trans with a brake...

I think you are right... I didn't see the "L". So, maybe a 67 8.2 which would be basically identical to the 69 rearend I am putting in my son's truck. I know the first generation Camaro rearends are pretty much an exact track width swap. Also, found this fairly descriptive article to help identifying 10 bolts since I am now more interested in this than I should be...

I suppose I could look closer at the rearend I have to see if it appears the same when I get home if someone doesn't identify this before then.

I’d appreciate that sir. Before I order ahy parts obviously I will pull cover and verify before putting 373s in it. A lot or research I found pointed to a Oldsmobile rear or Pontiac but couldn’t find definite answer. The half moon cutouts on bottom kinda through me off and the fact u can’t find a single number on the passenger side tube.

It's not the 8.5" GM 10 bolt, it's an 8.2" version. The identifier for the 8.5" is the lower housing having two squared corners that stick out on each lower corner as you look at the differential cover. Without those corners it's not a 8.5".
    This is an 8.5"

The 8.2 is much more common and seems just as strong as the 8.5.

The most important question here is what is going in front of it?

It is not a matter of how strong it is. It is a matter of how strong it it is, in the context of how you want to use it.

It does not have c clips in it, the axle shafts bolt in on the ends with 4 bolts.

The “no c-clip” part. Sounds like it isn’t a Chevrolet axle.

Does the end of the axle tube appear factory? I narrowed a 12-bolt once for a 64 GTO and we installed c-clip eliminators while we were at it. But, it was obvious they had been welded on.

If factory looking, sounds like a BOP.
