Low budget guy here. All my loose change went into the racecar rather than a hauler. Tow bar behind my pickup on the freeways of southern Cal towards Lions, OCIR or Irwindale. RaceCar in tow written in shoe polish on the back window. Wouldn’t wantto try that today
1978 getting ready for season opener at the Valley. #4 was a car I co-owned with Danny Armstrong. Opening night a certain #4 from Fonda showed up, painted in almost exactly the same color scheme. They parked right by us as they liked our choice of colors and numbers. The number was intentional, the color was by accident. Seems the paint shop gave us someone else's paint. We liked it so it was a go...
I still use an open trailer, but it's not hamb friendly... well the tow vehicle and probably the towed vehicle. Just rebuilt it last year, increasing the load capacity to 3500 pounds so the Whatever project can be a trailer queen! Previous incarnation was only 2000 pounds, as it was used to cart a mid 60's Morris Mini to autocross and track events. Also a trailer queen.
Entering the Fonda speedway. The Fonda speedway is next to the Mohawk River in Fonda NY. Something unique to Fonda was the fans could see (in the open trailer days) the cars coming to the track after exiting the NY State Thruway (The red arrow the track, Yellow Arrow Thruway exit) and as they crossed the bridge (White arrow) over the Mohawk River. The fans in the grandstand would cheer or boo the drivers as the exited the Thruway and crossed the bridge as they approached the track!
Yup! The tow equipment was a lot better than the one in your picture. Thank god we ran sportsman and he ran modified.
Not that one. Both the 2000 pound limit axle and the 3500 limit axle came with the appropriate springs. The old trailers in the modified days both sat on single wide trailer axles narrowed and welded solid to the frame. All 3 towed nice regardless of sprung or unsprung. The trailer with the #4 did have one bad habit; it kept chunking tires. I don't know if Danny ever solved the problem.
Kids. And nary a shoe in sight. Little girl on the right looks none to happy to be there, kid's were probably having fun doing barefoot summer kid stuff and got the "You kids come here I want to take a picture". "Ahhhh Mom/Dad do we have to?" Just guessing of course.
Who are the guys in this picture? The one sitting might be Doug 'Cookie' Cook. But the others are not Fred Stone, Tim Woods, or Lenny Woods. I remember seeing SWC at Detroit Dragway in the mid '60's and wondered who the black guys were. I had never known that Stone and the Woods were not white. My first lesson in diversity. Never gave it a second thought after that. To me they were drag racers.

Keep forgetting to add to this thread. Homemade trailer by #SamIyam and friends. That's my old 37 Chevy towing the BFD. First pic is B&W looks like it could have been back in 60s, but it is from 2005-ish timeframe. Color version for comparison.
posted before this is one of the best home built trailers and car built in early 60s out of Columbus Ohio He could raise and lower trailer, used a Packard load leveler system drive off and on and drive away. The engine is a whole story in itself destroked Pontiac counter rotating
i have a 1986 box trailer that i could cut up and make it like the ivo windows trailer. i am seriously thinking about cutting it up. i do open tow my 20' fed on a 16' trailer. built ramps to go up and foward. only issue is a little too much weight on the back end. had to add weight to front of trailer and back of truck to make it towable. overall, i remember all the racecars showing up at riverside park with car trucks.
