Thinking of going with a red-oxide...any thoughts/pics?

NO.

Steel wheels, take off the decorative BS.

If you want to make it look worn, wash the truck with a scotchbrite each day until the desired level of worn emerges.

You can just use the same bucket of muddy water, leave it out, scrub the truck down.


Ah crap, It's an old thread. I bet the paint is worn on its own by now

 

here's another idea you mite like,...my truck had a real bad enamel paint job with lots of orange peel,...I sanded it down to smooth it out and get rid of the gloss, I used a D/A sander,...I like it so much that I'm leaving it as is.
You mite try the same thing, then have it lettered and age the lettering. good luck.
btw, what suspension is under that truck? looks great...needs 50's wheels

I would just build a set of sideboards with the company name on it, in case it fails. Otherwise you will have a constant reminder of a failed business on the side of your truck.

Myself, I'm guilty of not checking the date of threads, guess I'm not alone.

 

old thread but, I’ve used this (grey) epoxy. I get it at a jobber cost. This is the retail. Mixes 1:1. The catalyst is usually the same price.
Cheaper than DP. Makes 2 gallons mixed. Lays down good. Available in quarts.
But like all primers, not much as far as UV protection.
Or, have paint matched to a red oxide color you like.
Flat clear or sand with 3000-5000 to reduce gloss.

 

Deerslayer won't be primer red after the rebuild but was for the first decade.

 

What did 'Yer Ol' Dad" use on his deuce? It held up for YEARS!!!! (That's Gray Baskerville, by the way)

 

Primer = HELL NO!
Lettering on door = HELL YES!
Old blue paint looks great…just wax it for preservation.
Pull the offensive badging and leave the holes…old ruff around the edges vehicles are cool…ESPECIALLY trucks!

It is not just an old thread, but as far as today's topics are concerned with paint and body work, red oxide or known as red primer, was a popular color in the late 50s, early 60s. It went on smoothly with a good hand held sprayer, did not run and no worries about an orange peel effect when finished.

For my brother and me, it was a temporary event that was the first step in making the backyard find of our 1940 Willys Gas Coupe project. The final paint could wait until we got our Willys Coupe running fast and become competitive.

Besides the history of the hot rod build was constantly taking parts on and off to make new changes or modify something. So, a finished paint job would have slowed us down because of taking care when near the paint or constantly adding protection.

Although is looks like a black primer, it was a red primer paint. It was verified by the owner and friend with the old black 1934 Ford 5 window coupe/Oldsmobile/LaSalle, from the way back time machine. Two old guys with great memories can’t be that wrong…

It was sprayed in our Westside of Long Beach backyard with several plastic sheeting tent covers that shaded the whole area and was secured with supporting poles/rope ties. We waited for a day when the consistent West winds were not blowing early. We had plenty of poles, ropes, and stakes from our Boy Scout days. Plastic sheeting was very inexpensive at our local huge discount paint store.
With the backyard garage door down and the whole area in front had a billowing clear plastic tent made up of several clear, large sheets, stakes, ropes, and poles.

These days, the red primer is not as common as the black primer coatings. Some factories have made the black primer more popular with the fancy names like black ice, frozen black, matte black and even frozen white metallic. So, it is out there for choices in all colors of “frozen” or primer, in modern times.

But goes back to the old days of red oxide or just plain old red primer paint. By the way, the cost at the time was a lot less for the red primer than the black primer...YRMV

I liked my car in red oxide. It was a 50/50 mix of red oxide primer and red basecoat.
