  4. I only have one project, a 1949 Lincoln that I will never get to ( start that is, get her done, finished that is) . I had hoped to have it be a father and son thing but sadly I lost my dad Sunday night. Time to sell the car and move on.

Sorry to read about your dad passing, but I would think some more about wanting to sell the car as later you might wish you still had it if it was to be a father/son thing.......

I'll be 72 in December, two stalled projects, plus the Model T and Model A that haven't had plates in over 20 years. Lack of funds and motivation are the reasons everything is the way it is, BUT I've gone to every automotive event I've wanted to, just not in a car I built, so did I miss anything? I don't think so. I could never afford a car from the very beginning and bought parts, sold parts, bought more parts, bough an affordable Model T for $220.00 delivered, sold half of it, bought more parts, sold stuff and bought more. That is how I've enjoyed the hobby and met some of the nicest people in the hobby. You can't miss something you never had, so for me a finished car really isn't a goal, and may be a disappointment for all I know. The fantasy of the build is the thing, if you can picture it finished, right down to the finest feature it may be time to sell it and start on another. Over the last year I've started to think about the projects I should have kept, should have taken more photos of them.

Kinda, I will be 57 later this year (that was hard to type) I currently have 2 running, driving, stopping rods. I have enough parts for 2 Model A coupes and I am gathering parts for my holy grail car. Likely selling all A parts to fund the HG however I can't seem to find a buyer for my scraps!!

I guess I am that guy as well.
I only do 33'/34's. I have has as many as 10 at once but now down to seven. I buy one and do all the heavy metalwork, get the car in color and do the interior and then the progress slows down to a crawl. At the moment I am out of room again. My chopped '34 Victoria is 95% done, my chopped 34 2-Door is 90% done, my '33 sedan delivery #1 is 90 % done and my new #2 33 sedan delivery is about half done. I started on it 2 months ago. My girlfriend recently told me that for me is is all about the journey, not the destination. I tend to agree with her. I like the build but not the drive. Been there done that. Time for a garage sale and make some room for some new iron. This whole Covid supply ordeal has made building difficult.

  10. Yeah, I'm that guy. What my dad used to call "car poor". Six projects in the pipeline.....one in the shop I can't seem to finish and three that are done? that always seem to need something. Plus a bunch of OT junk! It really is a sickness.....

I tried hard not to be that guy, but think I may have failed.

Daily driving the avatar, and have the sedan version in the single-car garage as a project. Driveway full of the kids cars.

Decided I wanted a FED, and started collecting stuff. Chassis builder is about 50% complete. No idea where I am going to put that FED once done.

It is short enough though to fit in the dining room. Would it be wrong to store a FED in the house... asking for a friend of course :D?

    Cheers,
    Harv

Sorry for your loss guys. Nothing like it to make you step back and evaluate what’s really important.
Six years later and I still find myself thinking that I want to call my Dad and show him what I just finished. And I don’t know what I’d do if my beloved wife wasn’t here with me. Deepest condolences.
I was that guy, but I think I have it under control finally. I whittled my herd of thirteen cars down to four when I retired but I’m back up to eight. I have three done and running, two running but needing a little more work before they are drivers, two full projects making regular progress, and one stillborn but not gone. I like them all but I would sell the runners if I found that certain dream car, but it would have to be finished. No more projects.

i am 73 and been collecting most of my life. right now i have 5 running and about 22 door car projects. i also do fiberglass and have molds to do A roadsters and T buckets and 27 T Roadsters. i have molds to do fenders and grilles and bumpers. i have several T's and A's and a '33 willys coupe and truck in 'glass. oh i forgot, i also have a 32 bantam altered and a 440 fed. building cars is all i have ever wanted to do. been retired for 20 years and still at it. i haven't bought anymore projects as i have ran out of room. my biggest problem is i can't sell anything. i don't have any children so these take their place. i am emotionally attached to them all. who could sell their kids? i will never finish them all so my wife will have an auction and they will go to some other nut to finish them. win win

I found out early in life that it was cheaper to buy a car then it was to buy parts. If my project at the time needed a motor, I would buy a car that had the motor I wanted for less money then I would spend on the motor at a junk yard. Then I had the motor and could sell parts off the car, then junk it and I would have a free motor, and a pile of money to build the car with. It worked out pretty well for me, I started buying cars I could sell a lot of parts off of, I specialized in Mopars. That soon led to a space problem, I had lots of cool parts, a few parts cars sitting, people buying parts from me, but no place to put anymore cars.

We solved that problem when we moved into the country. For several years, I had 13 "parts cars" plus the 4 licensed cars (with 2 licensed drivers in the house) plus a project car in the garage. At one point, my 11 year old son was proud of my car collection, he noticed I had at least one car from every decade between the 30s and the 80s. After his HS graduation, we moved back into town. That down size was a killer!

A couple years later, we bought a different place in town with more space. I was able to have a couple extra cars here at this business zoned property,

A couple years ago, my son moved out into the country. I have passed my car colleting addiction on to him. I believe he has a vehicle from every decade from 1950s up to 2010.

I also learned that I can only do one project at a time, and never be more then 1project ahead of myself, or everything went astray.

I retired in 2018 (at 62) and decided I needed to quit building major projects. Then I build a 39 Dodge pickup that I found out afterwards I didn't fit in very well, and sold. Then I rebuilt my 48 Plymouth coupe. Now I'm driving, and finishing up a 49 Dodge pickup. When I got this one running, I cleared the cars off my side yard, and got rid of nearly all of my parts. Finishing up the 49, and doing maintenance on it and the 48, and driving them as much as possible, is all I intend to do now.

3 months ago I looked what would have been a perfect project that used to be very high on my want list. It had most of what it needed, but would have had to be built. I added up the cost of what I thought it would take to become a driver, then I thought very hard about the amount of work it was going to require to make it a driver. Then I looked at the driveway/garage space and came to the conclusion something we already had would have to go away, or we would have 2 hot rods sitting outside. All things considered, at 65, I don't need, or want a project anymore, so I passed on it! Gene

About 3 months ago I realized I was that guy. I have been so busy with work, taking care of my disabled Wife, and building projects for family that I can barely touch mine. I looked around, and as painful as it is, it's time to face reality. Time to assign parts to the cars they go to, and cut loose the rest of the parts, and one of the Henry J's and F 250s. And stay off Facebook Marketplace.

My condolences as well to @raven and @chryslerfan55. Life is short and time with family is precious. I lost my wife in February 2020 to cancer, and my main focus has been on raising and taking care of my two daughters. May God guide and bless you both.
