Hot Rods Hauling a car-it's there THX

Trying to help a friend move a 40 coupe from Northern Cal to South Dakota. He has called several haulers and no response. Must be the crazy fuel prices. It's 1800 miles one way-since no response he is coming with his own trailer. I would guess maybe $2500 to haul open trailer but not sure with fuel prices but no response from any haulers.
Sign of the times I guess.

 

That there's a big negative. Have you seen the price of fuel lately?

 

I just had a car hauled from central Canada to the west coast of Canada (not too different from the distance you stated). Enclosed trailer. I got 3 quotes. The lowest quote $2100 Cdn, was obviously just a broker. He couldn't commit to a time, his contract was full of contradictions etc. that left me with an uneasy feeling...checking the Better Business Bureau reports confirmed my discomfort (lots of issues).

The 2nd quote was $2800. They had their own equipment, positive reviews but were booking 6-8 weeks out.

The 3rd quote was $3600. Had their own equipment. Very accustomed to transporting specialty and high end cars. Picked up the car within 3 days of my discussion, delivered the car to the destination 2 days earlier than expected. Nothing but a first class operation.

 

There are very few haulers that want to come here to Sodak since we are not on the way to anywhere and off the main corridors. The I80 corridor is as far as many travel unless they are running to the PNW via I94 in North Dakota. @BenD hauled a couple for me years ago but stays in the Southern States and West Coast

 

THX all-trying to help friend downsize due to health issues. Several 40's (two sold) and lots of parts. With shipping/hauling costs etc it is difficult especially heavy parts etc. He has been selling a few parts but shipping is crazy. A scrap guy is coming soon-he has a pile to go away-several 40 frames, wheels, sheet metal etc--all to scrap.

 

I would say he is not marketing that well if he is in Norcal and can't get any action on the parts. As mentioned in another thread, steel scrap is down right now so that is the dumbest thing to do anyway.

He has tried as have I--lots of early Ford stuff-as said a few pieces went away but still alot to go. He is just giving it to the scrap guy to get rid of it. Health issues the reason.

I'm fine-it's my friend with the issues. He wants it gone. He has a lot of stuff too--had some lowballers come-he got upset and said no more. He has nailheads, flattys, banjos, trans etc etc Has two complete adapter setups for small block to early ford trans too. I may snag one-got tow 40's sold for him thus far.

 

A dick move to scrap it instead of taking what was offered. Even if the offer is low it represents what the market was at that instant the offer was made.

 

Guy bought some stuff but then got kinda pushy on other stuff-friend not well-told him to leave. Got others coming for him but have to sch between many Dr appts. He just want a lot of it gone-as said, neither he or spouse doing very well. Wish I was closer 150 miles from here. Going next week to see if we can help and load one 40 coupe

 

@olscrounger good for you helping out a friend...I suspect as we age out and/or struggle with health, this will be a more common story than we care to hear.

 

Have sold some stuff on the HAMB and elsewhere for him but still a lot of stuff.; I may bring some stuff home and sell for him. He has maybe 15+ early heaters he has had for years-some Ford some Arvin etc etc and many dashes too-will try to move for him. May buy some stuff too that I don't need at all!

 

An eye-opening thread for many of us as we age.
A real shame if it ends up as scrap.

The best might be to load up what you figure will sell in a reasonable time that you can safely store and haul it home to sell for him . Things like the dashes probably bring more money each if you advertise them one at a time.

The Trouble with frames right now is just as with shipping a car or going after one, transportation costs. For my truck pulling the trailer it is 400 bucks for gas each way to and from Roseville. That's if I get 8 mpg average. That's figuring 650 miles each way.

It's sad to see when a guy has to sell his stuff off in a fire sale due to health issues. Something that us older guys are thinking about more and more though. There is a swap meet in Yakima Saturday that I really should haul a trailer full of stuff up to. Not only to sell it off but to get some money for the 48 to speed progress up a bit.

 

He has maybe 6-7 40 frames that he is not scraping yet but 3 more that are going to scrap I guess--will be over there next week to see what we can do to help him out.

 

Why not give Matt @IronTrap a shout, if interested he'll come in and take it all, plenty of videos on his youtube of him doing just that.

 

What’s his general location? You mentioned 150? miles from you, if south, not to far for me to drive. I don’t need 40 specific parts, but might be interested in a thing or two that’s somewhat near me.

 

Hes in Lake county--he and spouse are quite ill so doesn't handle visits much but I'll ck with him

Looks like you should pull a quick road trip to NorCal.
And if you do, I need a good 40 frame

I have been considering building a single-seater TROG car. Maybe I should.

 

Instead of deadheading from SD to CA and hauling back, have him price flying into CA and renting a small U-Haul box truck & trailer and hauling back to SD with that. An added advantage is no wear and tear on his rig & trailer and he cuts the drive time in half from 3600 to 1800.
Driving is ridiculously expensive right now! As an example; 10 MPG @ $5.00 gallon ($6.00-$7.00 in CA) it'll cost .50 per mile ($900 to travel the 1800 miles).
No cheap option as flights are sky high as well as any one way rental leaving CA.
If he's also making a bulk purchase of parts, he has an empty box truck to put them in (or list the open space on the HAMB or U Ship...

..........A good idea, but from what Tim mentioned, he may not be physically up to doing all of that.

 

My Ford was an 1800 mile ship in 2014, ran me $1300 and I was happy with the service. That would be $2500 and up now. I have stopped looking at out of state cars.

 

Like a lot of you guys, i have loads of parts--just sitting around. I've finally came to the realization if i don't figure out how to help somebody else with them, the scrap dude is going to love my widow. Now when i sell at a swap meet i practically give the stuff away, people always ask why and i just say i like them--sometimes i get the part gone and get a new friend, at my age a hell of a lot better than a part.
