Bought some M/T covers at the swap for my SBC. Already has the hole for a PCV valve knocked out and a grommet in place. Do I need a baffle plate screwed in under the valve?

Everyone needs to understand that there is a ****storm of oil underneath the valve covers. Without good baffling, your PCV valve will **** oil into the intake of you engine and you will consume oil at a high rate.

Also, NEVER install a brake booster check valve in place of a proper PCV valve. You will not believe the oil consumption. A friend bought a truck with a 289 SBF in it and it took several of us to finally figure out the problem.

  4. I have done it, thinking back I am not sure if there was a baffle or not?

I see they sell a grommet with a baffle built in. Good?

Only takes a little time to form a baffle of thin aluminum & JB Weld it in place .

I takes a bit more work to get an original baffle out of an old stock valve cover, make it fit, and jbweld it in place.

Just be careful that your homemade baffle doesn't interfere with the nearby, rockers arm in motion.

  9. THAT! is what I used on my 54! Yes, good

There's already hole bosses for a baffle plate. These aren't mine, off the 'net, I'm not at home. IIRC the stock baffle goes in between two cylinders, I don't think it will fit where the M/T holes are.

I'm using one of those baffled grommets on my SBC and they work excellent. Just a slit to allow air, but doesn't **** oil.

Did you guys leave that piece of foam in and push the PVC valve down on it or remove it? See pic above.

  14. Man, that was 20 years ago even tho it happened in HAMB time which seems like yesterday!? Pretty sure I pulled the foam?

I have used Mr. Gasket and Moroso ones. Neither have foam

I am certain that if it comes with foam in it, it needs to be there.

  16. The one I had with foam was designed to be run as is and there is a rubber baffle with a slot in the side to keep oil in. If you remove the foam is simply served as a rubber grommet.

Perhaps the foam is a design change, to try to make them work? :)

  18. Naw, just a cheap Mr Gasket part we had in stock that I made work. 70s/80s blister pack parts

I used the baffled grommet with the foam, so far so good. I wanted to go the opposite of what you're doing; run smooth valve covers. I drilled the intake and stuck the PCV underneath the distributor, and picked up the manifold vacuum from the backside of the rear carb. You don't even notice it back there. Oil fill is though the tube in front. IMG_5752.jpg IMG_5753.jpg IMG_5801.jpg

I have done a bunch like this.

As you point out, it just disappears back there.

The one I bought is a Moroso and it didn't have the foam inside.

This one has the rubber baffle as well as the foam. I took the foam out, the valve was smashing it flat.

Screenshot_20220620-155657_Chrome.jpg The issue with the MT one's is that the hole is right above the rocker arm.
The 2 holes next to the punch outs are what the baffle screws to
This is what comes with them when you buy them new. Wouldn't be hard to make..

Mr. Gasket makes a simple baffle, comes 1 per package. I just picked one up for my car. But simple enough to make.

Ok, when you guys screw your baffles in are you adding red lock tight? I always have this fear of a screw coming loose for some reason

The Mr.Gasket one I picked up comes with lock nuts, but will loc-***e them anyway. If the bolts are not SS, I will replace them.

Thats why I made my own & epoxied them in , no fear of loose fasteners bouncing about !

Hello all, what do you think about this setup for my pcv? SBC in a 36 Ford. Chevy script valve cover and I’ll run an inline pcv to the carb, intake air will be through the fill tube in the intake. This will be on the drivers side as it it has more clearance to the firewall. Let me know your thoughts, thanks, Dale
