Back on the subject of 1936 wide five brakes. I've got a pair of fronts and 32-34 spindles. Can I use 42-48 Lincoln Backing Plates, or do I have to strictly use 39-40? I can't find any 39-40 for the life of me!
I've got backing plates if you need them. I believe you need to use 36 spindles with 36 long snout drums. Never done it, but that what I think works on the one year drums and spindles
After talking to Dennis Lacey (Early V8 Garage), 39 backing plates work with 32-34 spindles but you need a special kingpin, and spacer for the spindle. What backing plates do you have?
Yes, you can mount hydraulic backing plates on early spindles in many different ways. The problem is your 36 drums. 36 spindles are about a 1/2" longer to reach the longer snout on the drums. one year only set up. I probably have both types of ford backing plates, 75 plus the ride
I have talked to someone that has ran '32-34 spindles, '39 Lincoln backing plates, and '36 drums. They overcome the spindle length problem with a spacer. Do you have lincoln backing plates or ford ones?
Lots of differing ideas on '36 spindles; but here is some info about '32-'36 spindles. The snouts on '32-'35 spindles are the same length. '32-'34 use a steel grease ring like Model A's have; while a '35 spindle has a stepped area for a normal grease seal to ride on. The snouts on '36 spindles are the same length and are identical to '37-'41 round-back and '42-'48 square back. Any differences to make up for the deep hubs on '36 wide 5 fronts is made up in the offset of the backing plates. As far as I know you can run the deep Zephyr brakes on the earlier small pattern spindles with '36 wide 5 drums. You need to use '37-'41 kingpins ( with new lock pin grooves ground in) and those Torrington thrust bearing set up between the spindle and axle as there is no room for the earlier style bearing to sit above the spindle. '32-'34 spindles would require a inner bearing spacer for the grease seal to ride on and these along with '35 spindles would use the tall early nut (or the shorter late nut with a spacer).
Great info Rich, I know from a guy who has done it, as opposed to me, a guy who reads too much ! Thanks for your input here.
OK, this thread is full of good wide five info so i,m subscribed now with this post . Easier to find in the future .
