I bought a set of model a reproduction perch pins that look identical to the one sold by Macs autoparts, however the shank does not fit my 1932-1936 axle. I have a 1932 bob drake perch pin that fits well. The model a reproduction pin seems to be oversized by .003” on diameter. Is this normal to have to chuck the part up between lathe centers and turn the O.d.? I guess in the end I didn’t save any money going with the cheapest set. I bought a set of perch nuts from a different well know source and their threads were nonfunctional . It seems like reproduction parts are a crapshoot as to working outside the box. Why can’t these manufacturers test fit the parts
Let me get this straight: In an effort to "save money", you bought Model "A" perch pins when you knew you actually needed '32-'36 perch pins, and now you're whining and complaining because the parts you bought won't work with the axle you have? Then you claim that the perch nuts you purchased from a "well known (but not named) source" won't work because the threads are "non-functional"? In the absence of pictures, what the hell do you mean by "non-functional"?
Don't ever use Mac's Auto as the benchmark to measure to. They are the Walmart of old car parts. An A perch should be the exact same diameter on the shank as any other perch through 1948. Different lengths and top configurations, but the shank should be the same. If I was shopping for a new perch I'd make damn sure they were forged, not cast. Usually the cheapos are cast.
do you really speak to people like this. This is the kind of negative atmosphere that keeps people from posting. Were talking a difference of .003 that’s the width of a human hair it would have been helpful if someone had the dimensional difference between a model a perch axle hole and that of a 32-36. I doubt that ford would have a reason to change them. and in this hobby parts are interchanged quite regularly. I’m using a model a frame with houdaile shocks so why would I not choose model a perches.
What do you mean " speak to people like this " These people are giving you good advice, it is not negative atmosphere. just constructive criticism. What made the second set of perch pin threads non-functional ? You didn't save any money after buying 2 sets of perch bolts. Sometimes you just have to step up, and buy the good stuff in the beginning.
thanks!! That all I needed to know. The set of pins I bought on eBay are forged and they look like a nice product. The seller said they were surplus, he’s sold many sets, maybe I just got that set that slipped through sample inspection. I’ll turn the o.d. Down to match the bob drake set that I bought prior. I’ve never really had a problem with Any thing I’ve bought from Mac. Thanks for the heads up.
There enough threads on here about Mac’s to run away like your pants are on fire. Best to always search on here for companies you want to do business with related to our cars and trucks.
No it is clean. I used a pencil grinder with a scotch pad to clean it. I also measured the pin with a micrometer. Its definitely .003” larger on diameter than the bobdrake pin that fits
