Upon reviewing the situation, I conclude that it's my own damn fault. With the filler tube being 1" diameter, I sweated in 2 copper 90 degree elbows to reach the tank. There was no way that the gas could make the turn fast enough without shutting off. I really knew that at the time yet I still went ahead and did it. No excuse really. I'm perfectly capable of welding a filler neck in the tank but I chose the lazy option.

You got a fix in mind, or gonna just suffer through filling it for as long as you own the car?

As soon as the gas leaves the nozzle it is no longer being pushed by the pump pressure, but instead is relying on gravity to get to the tank. Gas under pressure leaving a 3/4 inch nozzle will flow a larger quantity than gravity can suck through a 1" pipe.

The plan is to drive around locally with a one gallon Jerry can. Drive until I run dry and just put in enough to get home and pull the tank to fix it right.

Who ever rigged up the filler neck (s) on my 77 flatbed did pretty much the same thing but with standard size filler necks. They built in what amounted to a tight 90 on their shortened hose and it would take several extra minutes to slowly dribble gas in to the tank to fill it. Plus they had a piece of green garden hose with a kink in it for a vent hose.

  5. Did that once and ran out right at the bottom of an entrance ramp; seems like it took forever to empty the gallon can with cars whizzing by, and I ended up having to stop and fill the gallon can 'cause it would be touch and go if the first gallon got me home.

Thank you Rich. Good point to consider. It is a real nuisance with a Gerry can. Made me think of plan B. The car has an electric fuel pump. Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees.
