So what I've got is a 51 Chevy 2 door sedan (Styline Deluxe)w/216. I noticed my manual shifting was getting gummy and figured I'd drain my transmission oil, throw in a can of BG and top it off with 90wt. This being the first time I've done this I removed the rectangular hatch door wich should reveal what I believ to be the filler screw but the filler screw is positioned just under the floor below the hatch? Has anyone encountered this?. I have no reason to belive the car has ever been into a wall pusshing everything back. Should I notch the floor to gain access? Am I not even looking in the right place? My trusty shop manual wont even show me location for the filler screw. Thank's

well here's how I got it figured. the filler screw on every transmission I've ever dealt with was at the proper level where the gear oil is supposed to be. you fill it so it dribbles out, then you put the plug back in

so the fill hole should be on the side somewhere. the hatch door is for removing the transmission for service.. they had a little chain hoist A-frame type of thing back in the day to pull the trans up into the car.

what a pain that must have been. makes you wonder what they were thinking

... you may also want to check your shift linkage. adjust it, check the bushings for slop... clean and re grease the junction block on the steering column where the two shift arms come out.

    that's what I would do.

I'd like to thank 49ratfink for a legitimate reply to my post. I'll definately take your advice. This being my first post on the H.A.M.B. I wasn't expecting some smart ass remarks concerning my problem. Maybe I'm mistaken as to why this forum exists. Maybe it's just as catty (oh wait... that's Katty with a K) as some of the dumb ass local music forums. I was sure that this was a place to seek knowledge as I personally refuse to drop my shit off at a shop to let someone else work on it.
If this is however just as KATTY as one of those fore mentioned local music forums then you'll no doubt eat this whole fuckin' response up too.

  8. wtf is katty?

I personally use a long clear hose, one end in the tranny's top filler hole and the other clamped onto the end of the gear oil bottle then I just sit on it and drink beer till I see oil spilling out. It's a hell of a lot easier than pulling back the carpet and accessing the access panel. Only time I've been in there was when I was dropping the motor and trans back in after a rebuild to help guide it in.

huh....I wasn't giving a smart ass reply, I was telling you the very basic info you needed to fill a manual trans. You do it from under the car.

Sorry you got the wrong impression.

    :)

    Texas Bob ...

    calm down ... :)

I have filled the transmission on my 40 Ford ... from the top. Gravity and a hose worked better for me ... than trying to squeeze a bottle or pumping the heavy fluid into the transmission. The transmission cover came out of my old 40 fairly easy. I was also changing the cover to a better one with no damage ... krusty40 ... is now enjoying the benefits of THE new transmission cover ... he bought the 40 ... :)

Just roll the car over and fill it that way! Finally made the HAMB huh?

    Welcome

I had a real problem with binding when the plastic bushings wore out on the shifter linkage, check that, It would usually get hung up between 2nd and 3rd

    Texas Bob,
Back in the day of Oil Filters being inside a canister, and not screw on, mechanics had a suction device that looked a lot like a grease gun. This was used to take the oil residue out of the canister before putting new filter and oil in......
I happen to have one of these devices, and it comes in real handy for putting the oil in a manual tranny. After draining the oil I use this suction gun to suck the oil out of the oil bottle, the stick it in the fill hole on the side of the tranny and push the oil in. Yep, ya gotta do it from under the car, but makes things real easy when you can't get the oil bottle to the hole without a lot of tubing and consternation...I attached a picture of the device
