Hello fellow H.A.M.B'ers... Can you help me identify this HALIBRAND QUICK CHANGE REAREND. It see a "solectria"and it says halibrand on the side casing but no other marks. It is 51" over all length and from bolt hole to bolt hole it's 39". Also it has no axles, where do you buy parts for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also has no place for change gears if that was a quick change it doesn’t look like it is anymore? Maybe there’s a separate back piece that houses them that’s missing?
The side bells appear to be off the shelf Halibrand V8 parts. The center section is likely a proprietary casting, probably derived from a cut down Halibrand part. Halibrand had non QC centers where the pinion is on the same centerline as the axles. Why the bolt on cover? Take it off, and see what's in there. My guess is that the differential is 90s Halibrand. Take the side covers off and see what you've got. Don't be skeerd! There is nothing in there that will hurt you and you can't mess anything up. You won't change the preload or backlash. Just unbolt a side plate and use the two tapped holes (5/16-18) with some bolts to jack the plate away from the center. You only need to do one side but which one is the question. Looking at the Solectria on Wikipedia it may have been driven from the rear. No problem, if you take one side off and you can't lift the differential assembly out, just do the other side. I probably have any parts you may need. Axles are really only dependent on splines and what brakes you may have.
^^^^ possibly from the short lived Electric version of the S-10 pickup which as Gearhead mentioned looks to have been rear driven. Chevy only sold 60 of them and shredded the remaining 460 unsold units for the sake of hiding proprietary engineering. https://www.mail-archive.com/ev@lists.evdl.org/msg27424.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_S-10_EV
Was never an actual quickchange. The pinion is coming in the center, and would have to be a low shaft to reach all the way to the back.
There was a guy that sold at West Springfield, MA January swap meet that had a non-QC alum center, looked to be Champ size, I could tell the pinion was on center but never saw the back. I wanted to ask the application but the guy was always busy..
Just for the "no change" quickchange guys, info. Here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/halibrand-no-change-rears.41706/
