  1. To me white piping on anything but a White paint job looks like Chalk Lines at a Crime Scene. Ya know, the lines the Cops draw around a Body on the asphalt before it's removed. Same for contrast color on the Carpet on the inside. "Yep less is more" most of the time. After all the hand work you've done just let the fenders float into the Body panes uninterrupted. At least that's how I would do it, pretty positive my Brother would have also.

    I can't remember where half my tools are but I will try to exercise some restraint. Ya right! :cool:

    I plan on this Wizz. I'm thinking about addding a bit of gold to the mix and the sides of the grille and the backs of the bumpers may just get some gold metallic like the grilles of those bandit cars I built. Gold panel stripi9ng may be too much bandit car tho! Of course I would have to have Bandit lettered on the door and paint the outside of my car trailer to look like this. "Any man that would paint his truck like that would wear feathers to a ministers funeral"

    I agree that white panel stripes and white welting would be a bit over board on a black truck. Sage advice.

    The HAMB has never and likely will never agree on anything. I know what I want to do but sometimes I enjoy running the flag up the pole and seeing who solutes it and who "one finger" salutes it. I stopped asking my wife because we don't agree on anything and it will take years to complete. :cool:

    For your vehicle I'd go black, but I do like the chrome on marks car. Depends on the car for me, but definitely blk on blk.

    If your doing striping, use black fender welt on your 40 to avoid conflict
    with the flow of the striping and the unity of the body style.
    Chrome welting makes the car look "segmented".

    I voted for black on your truck. I used the stainless trim on my 40 and I like the look on that baby blue car. I did not like working with the stuff. It is very hard to bend and the ends needed to be finished off with some hand made plugs to look good imho. I think the black welting will look great on your masterpiece. The only thing better would be none at all. I will be using black welting on my 39 SC.

    I have wondered if a guy could come up with an anti chaff tape to go between all metal parts. Something that didn’t have a bulb seal to deal
    with. Just to keep everything from rattling and squeaking. Then the color would be irrelevant, sort of like this comment.

    Here's an example of what I was talking about.
    I used chrome fender welting (and chrome everything else) when I built my old Panel Deliv. The welting on the rear fenders looked great...but when I installed the front sheet metal, I realized how stupid it looked stopping at the hood:(. 0.40.jpg

    So what about maintenance? I imagine white is harder to keep clean but isn’t black tough to wax around without getting wax all over it?

    i really thought I was going to go stainless, but the black argument on the front fenders is making me question myself.

  15. You could get tricky and attach the stainless to the inner fender lip and continue it forward. Might have issues with the hood/fender gap though....
     
  16. I know we often fuss way to much on the little things but that's what makes a killer car or a just nice car. Here's a way around it maybe. Regardless weather you go with Black, Stainless or heaven forbid White once done and from 20 feet away you don't like it it's a small job to remove it and go totally without as I and my Brother would to begin with. I know in the past he and I have used double layer of the old cloth electrical tape and never had any issues. Of course, we weren't anil perfectionist in those days.

    I rarely vote on what folks should do with their rides, but you really should use black welting - white stripes or not.

  19. I think maintaining it would be a matter of what the surface of the material is. I've seen some that have a grainy texture and some that are smooth. I know lots of guys use VW welting because it has a smaller bead, is very flexible, and is smooth.
    I voted "black" because you didn't have a listing for "Fox Pecker Pink"... JMHO, YMMV...

    If you want to prevent squeaking and paint to paint contact, consider something like 3M strip caulk. It serves the same purpose without the unsightly bead. It’s what I used on my’58 and I’m really happy with the end result…

    Yea. I'm with you. I painted my deuce pickup waterfall blue. There is no welting that I think would look good.

    My personal choice on a black truck would be black. I just prefer the welting to stand out the way white or chrome would. And white always turns dirty white over time.
    I bought ivory welting for my '39 that's Wimbledon White, and it's still sitting in the box. Haven't decided if I'll even use it yet?

    I dunno Mark, that just bugs the hell outta me.
    It's kinda like running a beltline pinstripe down the hood and door but not continuing down the quarter panel...just stopping:(

    This is something that I was thinking of yesterday. I haven't seen it before anyway not that I was aware of. Interesting idea Steve...and not that crazy! :cool:

    Back before my roadster was painted I had @themoose do a photoshop of the car in black (which was what color I wanted the most) and one in maroon. The car is maroon today as a result. I know what I want but that doesn't mean I don't listen to the opinions of folks that may very well know more than I, and there are many on the HAMB.

    Responses like Steve's above is an excellent example of why I ask.

    Your 40 is excellent Mark. I love the stainless on the rear fenders and to be honest I never even noticed the front fender welting until I made this thread. I have never had an assembled 40/41 PU so I had no idea the welting stopped and started. That's why we do this right?
    What do you think of Steve's idea of continuing the bead under the hood? Is there room for it? There are fender bumpers and bolts in there, I could easily secure it and it would add another layer of protection to guard against paint-on-paint. Have you seen it done?
