  8. I got a 390 for free complete carb to pan because it was stuck. Thought I could free it up… nope, one cylinder was gone. I don’t mean wore out I mean non-existent, like a rod had exited stage left. I sold it for $100 on CL. I really wanted a caddy and hoped I could get it going.

Too late Chris.. I sold it awhile back and even though I spent a bunch building it , I didn't get hurt selling it:D Shoot , might even build another one. Now where is that extra 390 crank?:p

I'm very interested in purchasing a 390 to replace my aging 331 without loosing down time.
Any leads on a buildable core or ready to go engine would be much appreciated

I heard the same crickets trying to give away a couple of 324 complete pan to intake cores.

Here is some in Ohio. If you can get them shipped, its best to put them in individual boxes and ship separately $$$ weight. I had some shipped and they cost about $100 each time. Had some aluminum 500 Cad heads shipped once and they wanted about $340.......but thats another story.

I had the opposite experience, we used to have a great counterman at the UPS center in town, was a car guy and always hey, what do you have today??? So I went in with a set of Edelbrock FE heads, packed in those nice Ebock boxes with the molded foam. He says watch this, and taped the two boxes together, and says now you have one package and you just saved about 30%. Of course they were aluminum, but the savings was cool

Yep, a lot has to do with the guy giving you the quote. Generally there is a certain weight where they start adding a premium to the shipping costs. I'm thinking it might be about 75 lbs, but can't say for sure. A lot of the cost also has to do with whether someone packs it or has the shipper pack it. Some people figure "money is no object" when shipping stuff that someone else is paying for. Hence the $340 tab for shipping a pair of aluminum Cad heads......and $5000 worth of insurance. I contacted the UPS in Florida and asked what it would have cost if the guy had packed them himself , in individual boxes, and without the $5k insurance (which I didn't need since I was paying with PayPal) and it was about $130 (still high). So I sent the guy an additional $60 ($130 total) and he had to eat the rest of it. We had agreed beforehand that he would pack the heads himself and I would send him $70. I figured I would send him more but didn't agree to do that. I figured if I got cast iron Cad heads shipped two different times for $100 or less, the aluminum heads would be cheaper. If the person shipping them tells them to pack and ship......it can be anything. The box the heads came in was large enough to easily ship an engine block in and loaded with packing materials. Overkill to say the least.
