    I think I read somewhere that it started out as a Bandini sports car? What made me remember is, when I was growing up, Bandini was a brand of fertilizer my Dad used. Lol

    Hello,

    We learned many tricks for adjusting the traction and weight distribution from early drag racers. By the time we were ready to make the move to C/Gas with our 1940 Willys Coupe, the rules were established and no alternative was allowed, unless it was a part of the structure of the car.

    So, my brother and I put in some 1 inch steel plates from a local scrap yard into the trunk of our 40 Willys Coupe. The weight was heavy enough and placed correctly to not move on acceleration. They were on the trunk floor, giving needed weight over the rear end and slicks. But, upon tech inspection at Lion’s Dragstrip, we were told that the non-secured steel plates were illegal as they were just additions and not a part of the car. Like adding sand bags, bar bells, etc.

    We cut and moved the plates above the rear axle, welded them into place. The remaining plates were welded to the steel structure of the trunk over the gas tank. Now, when we went back to the Lion’s Dragstrip tech inspection line, they approved the installation and it was part of the rigid structure and support of the rear trunk area of the Willys Coupe. I suppose we could have welded in vertical steel plates to line the trunk for more weight, but, what we welded in place was sufficient to get us into the C/Gas class.

    Now, the larger 283 bored out to 292 c.i. and the addition of the new Isky Gilmer Belt Drive 671 Supercharger, plus blower spec parts made the final package potent enough to do some eliminating and gather wins in the class.

    Similar set up with 6 Stromberg Carbs on an Isky Gilmer Belt Drive for a 671 on a SBC motor. Also, the 2.5 gallon Moon Aluminum Gas Tank and Pump was attached to the floor in front of the passenger bucket seat in our 1940 Willys Coupe, too.
