I used a 2-axle trailer just long enough to hold my 3400# street stock, and eventually a 2400# UMP modified to different tracks for a total of about 5 years. The trailer was un-sprung and had a front mounted tire rack. The tracks my cars raced at were 50 to 60 miles from home, so the math would be pretty simple to do for total towing mileage. It wasn't ideal, but pulling with a 1/2 ton pickup and eventually a dualy "short bus", so I didn't have to load and unload a tool box, spare parts, etc. every week, my less than ideal setup(s) worked. Todays enclosed and sometime very fancy trailers are a luxury that seems to have become a "must have". Gotta keep up with everyone else, ya know? Racers, who are often their own worst enemies, then complain that they can hardly afford to race, or they have already been priced out of racing. I'm building a 60's style, very mild FED, and when it's finished I will build a very simple open trailer to pull to the track. Lynn
So, do you figure you'll have it all done by next spring ? Take pictures as you go so we can see progress.
Most Racer's I grew up with would spend their total net worth [and all they could borrow] on their race car. Then their trailer was a cobbled together POS made from an old queen-sized bed frame with junkyard wheels I know of an advertiser that wouldn't sponsor a car unless it was towed to the track on an open trailer. He said a race car being towed through a small town would grab more attention than a billboard. A purpose built FED trailer would be really easy to build because of the small payload weight. And easy to look Vintage but still retain modern axles and electric brakes. The length of them and also being softly sprung makes them handle really nice.
I had been hoping to get it to the track yet this year but am beginning to doubt if that will happen. A lot has been done but a lot remains. Here are a couple terrible photos but if you squint just right and ignore the clutter you might be able to make out the beginnings of a FED. Lynn
Riverside, right? The one time it turned about a 1/2 second faster than anyone else. Or have I got my stories mixed up?
Stolen from the "Ford Truck Enthusiasts" website; b-t-w, don't click on this link unless you want to see thousands of pix, most of which are hamb friendly.
Quite sometime ago someone posted a picture of a white Ford pickup about a 1935 pulling a dual axle trailer with a race car on it. The trailer had four fenders . One on each tire. If anyone remembers this and could post a picture I thank you
Actiually, I had swiped that pic from this site. It was either posted in the Vintage Pic thread or the Traditional Images thread. LOL. so now its come full circle Bobby
