Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by GTfastbacker, Aug 6, 2022.

  1. Gentlemen,

i tried to remove the Window handles on my 51 Mercury without success.
Is it the right tool i use?
Maybe wrong for these type of cranks?
    I am confused….

    Thank you

That should be the correct tool, if the spring clip was installed correctly you run the tool in behind the handle straight with the handle.
Push in on the door panel and see if you can push it far enough to see behind it. To see which way the spring clip is on the handle. It's been 30 years since I sold my 51 so the memory isn't perfect on it.

I shouldn't say, cause I don't know. Ford, you depress that bezel thing towards door then a little pin is exposed.

Is it like the little “U” with a few ears on it that sits it a groove? If so I use a shop rag and with “saw action” get them out.

I’ve found them is the opposite direction. After pushing in the door panel and wedging it back, I’ve used a thin welding rod with a hook bent at the end.

  8. 49 was the last year for the pin and square shank. I've had them fight me and go to the shop towel to get it done. Seems sometimes when handle keeps falling off a guy will squeeze the clip tighter together and it stays on. Problem is the little ears are no longer out far enough for the correct tool to catch them.

That's the tool I used on my 51.

  10. Some have clips and some have a pin. push the bezzel and door panel in to see what you have.

When I was a kid my dad used a screwdriver and a lot of cussing to get them off. Haha
