I've had several yellow hot rods but this year at Louisville maybe I missed them but I didn't see many yellow cars. I'm thinking of doing my new build deuce roadster in my favorite color GMC Wheatland Yellow. Same color I painted the 2004 NSRA giveaway truck. Has yellow lost it appeal?
Honestly, I am not a fan. I know the AG coupe was yellow, but there are very few cars that it looks good on. I’m talking the canary yellow that you see a lot. I tend to be more muted in my choices. Silvers, black, maroons. Just my opinion. If you like it, then I say go for it. Color choice is a personal thing.
I think one reason yellow gets a bad rap (sometimes) is that it’s used to hide poor body work. Or maybe used in monochrome builds. One of the first cars I helped build as a teenager was a 38 Chevy coupe. Horrible body. Even worse body work. We buried it as best we could with John Deere yellow. also, if building to sell, that might not be the best choice. But I’ve seen plenty of cool well built rides in yellow. The 2 tone yellow and white and even black cars from the mid 50s look cool to me. If yellow makes you smile, I’m in. my first car I painted for myself was corvette yellow. The finest synthetic enamel Western had to offer.
I like yellow but ask a hundred guys get a hundred different opinions. The Gary Kessler roadster is one of my favorites.
It depends on the car. Yellow is an " in your face" color, especially brighter hues like Corvette yellow. It goes well on hot rods, while more subtle shades like on catdad49's truck work better on customs. I did an OT Maverick in a Corvette shade of yellow with black stripes, it looked good. In contrast, that shade would look like***** on my Lincoln coupe. I love to see a yellow hot rod in a sea of red ones. It usually gets my attention first.
I love yellow. Driving a yellow car, looking out over the hood makes every drive seem like its springtime. I painted two cars yellow, a 65 Vette and a 56 Chevy. I would not hesitate to paint one yellow if I were you. Its your car, your choice, who cares if its unpopular with the majority of people?
For us low $ rodders, cost of paint was a small factor in the pick of color. In the 1950s an 60s,cost of colors played a bit of a part. Red was higher $$ ,an white was just under it. A good gloss red and a white were more,$= The red pigment was the cost thing, and with white was that it took more paint to cover. Yellow was not far behind the upper cost, light colors need more paint to cover. So even if a light color was not higher pre Qt.,you had to buy 2x as much, for a nice even look. I liked gloss black the most,an it was also close to 1/2 as much $ an covered extra well, but also took around two X the work of smooth out before painting*{ or it will showed things/flews in the body, you failed to really smooth, more then light colors. Not being lazy about prep* made much more difference then the color cost . How good you stand out at nite though is basic, light colors can be seen better in the moon lite! So really is what your after!! I had the time/or made the time for prep, but used Rust-Oleum Gloss Black{ with a little enamel hardener} an buff out after 2 weeks. Did it that way in 1960 an ever since then. One of my fav. pics, of my rod, is showing the reflection and color of the rod parked next too me,in my gloss black paint! Don't think it gets much better, even with high $ paints. And a willing HOTROD REDHEAD always helps!! Always had a yellow engine!!
Bright yellow is pretty bright. There's no other color with the word "screaming"****ociated with it LOL. Wouldn't call any color "bad". People like different things. But really bright screaming yellow gives me a headache LOL. I always liked the soft light yellow on some of the GM cars. I think it's called goldwood yellow on the Corvette.
I just recently sold my yellow 2014 Corvette convertible with black top and interior. Over the 8 years I owned it I had lots of positive comments. I'll probably paint my new roadster the Wheatland Yellow I like. By the time I get to it if ever who knows?
I have had several yellow cars. I like yellow as long as it's the right tone, to my liking that is. The 1950 on the left is my car, the 1951 on the right is a friend's car. This was taken a few years ago.
Are you talking Caterpillar Yellow or School Bus yellow? Other than the shade of yellow that @catdad49 posted, earthmovers and kid haulers are the only vehicles that should be painted yellow IMHO. And maybe taxi cabs......
I wonder why that is on the color yellow, is there a historical, social, superstition, taboo ? that yellow****ociates with, If someone calls you yellow, it's not a compliment. You just don't see many yellow cars/trucks in general, later model Corvettes a fair amount. We have resale red, no sale green, black always popular in the Hot Rod world, (Henry Ford, any color you want as long as it's Black) I've owned several black cars, trucks and they are definitely are more work to keep up with, your bodywork, block sanding better be good, hard to beat Black with chrome for Kool IMO. I think a yellow Hot Rod looks good, I just don't see many. A google ref. To answer my question. Yellow symbolizes happiness, warmth and sunshine in most cultures; these are characteristics of the yellow sun and its effects. In ancient cultures where a god or gods were****ociated with the sun, such as Egypt and China, yellow was the highest and noblest of colors and thus, the color of religious figures and royals (who were thought to be descendants of the gods). ref, Conroy explains that all colors have a flip side, a degraded meaning that traditionally opposed the positive one. Along with warmth and happiness, yellow also represents cowardliness and deceit. Many ancient cultures believed that black was "the color of mystery and of the mysterious ways and wisdom of God," historian Ellen Conroy wrote in her book "The Symbolism of Colors" 1921.
Here is one yellow car I could definitely live with, saw it at Louisville don't remember the owner but kudos to him it's badass.
Difficult hue to view. Needs to be on the right car. The only yella car I owned was a 69 Mach 1, flat black hood and head light buckets, spoiler and window louvers. It looked good...but better after I painted it maroon.
