Properly selected, and properly tuned multiple carb sets can actually boost fuel economy, depending on one's driving habits; although not by a lot, maybe 8~10 percent. And yes, I do believe it, and have proved it time and again.

Man I don't think I've seen it said here, but they why? Frigging horsepower made the trad way man... Now don't get me wrong, my flathead has a 4bbl on it, but back in the day that wasn't an option. Anything to get more gas into the engine back then, right? So guys that build um that way now are following traditional building.

    Mark's 40 gives me a semi..... That's a real beauty.

As I said earlier, dual carburetors on an inline six will definitely deliver both more power and better mileage when in tune. I proved that one on my '53 Chevy.

  8. This is hard to tune gets bad gas milage and makes the car slower than a big 4 barrel but look at it . IMG_0223.JPG

Face it we build/drive these cars for reasons that have nothing to do with being practical. I tell my better half it makes sense to spend 10k rebuilding a 50 chevy rather than 50k on a new truck that will depreciate, she says add in the cost
of the garage I built to do it.

The question with any set up is whether its sized properly for the engine and then tuned properly. Getting to that point is not always easy, and often frustrating and expensive......no matter what set up someone uses.:)

I just point to the cost of the 10 trips to Poland she has gone on for her geneology hobby.

When I was building the Packard V8 to go into my '55 Studebaker pickup, I said, "It's a truck and one 4-bbl is plenty." But the Caribbean 2x4 setup was on the shelf and just jumped in there when I wasn't looking.

Why have them on the shelf; put them on the street.

If you think about it, because the intake manifolds have twists and turns and are different lengths, the idea that you can insiminate gasoline droplets into the flowing air at one central location and get exactly the same amount of fuel and air to every cylinder is rediculous.

That said, the engine must then be tuned to get sufficient fuel to the leanest cylinder. That causes the other cylinders to receive more gas than they actually need.........thereby wasting gas and possibly reducing power.

Having additional carbs and an intake that allow a straighter path to each cylinder allows each cylinder to be tuned individually. That may take some additional modern technology to verify, but it is doable.

Modern engines (with fuel injection) are designed with "replicated ports" which means that each port is sized and shaped nearly identically to all the other intake ports. Older designs often had intake ports that were not spaced evenly and could not be made identical.

So, if additional carbs are used and spaced properly, there is a better chance that you can tune them so that all cylinders receive the best/similar mixture rather than having to tune for the leanest cylinder. That COULD provide better mileage as well as more power if tuned properly. Some of the newer (98+) Chevy engines produce outstanding power while also getting very good gas mileage. If memory serves me, I think the LS7 (427) Corvettes were capable of 500 HP and well over 20 mpg.

The problem with carbs is that the owner needs to understand how to tune them and put some effort into getting them right........and that isn't always easy to do.:)

A lot of fast cars run one carb. Hardly ever see a fast 3 duece setup.
    I like the looks.
I know early cars may have helped performance.
Today it's about the look Imo.

Way cool. There is no way having that set that I would not use it. A stock air cleaner would “top if off”.

My OT Dune buggy has twin 48’s. They look cool, they don’t run all that good. They were on it when I bought it. I would rather run a single 4 bbl and a little super charger. Sure looks good tho and I’ve spent enough on it. Or….

You have to look back to the era where the 3x2s were produced. I think Ford, for example, released 3x2 systems in 1961, over the counter. The largest available Holley was probably in the 585/600 cam at the time, so a 3x2 setup likely outperformed it.

The last 3x2 factory setups I am aware of were the off topic 440 Mopars of 69/71. By that time, there were higher flowing single 4 barrels around. Probably a little marketing going on there, or maybe it was easier to calibrate a smallish center two barrel for emissions than one Dominator!

Back in the flathead era I understand the desire to use a common 97 or equivalent to increase flow. Even at the end of the flathead era, there were a few small four barrels around, but the junkyards weren’t exactly overflowing with them, and the 97s and 94s were ubiquitous.

I agree with you, back it their day, the 3X2s probably did add a few ponies over the stock four barrel. But , today, with better intakes and carbs, the four barrel produces more horsepower on the FE. Check out Jay Browns intake comparing book.
If I was going for max horsepower I would not be using the 3x2. What I AM going for is torque with 462 cubic inches. Stock heads, 3x2 carbs and factory long tube headers. The last two items, mainly for appearance! It’s a work in progress! With little progress! Lol

Whole lot of IF's and COULD's. It all comes down to an engine package of complimentary components. Vehicle too.
