Technical **August is for a Bang of a Good Time**

  1. I'd think it be a Rolls Royce Phantom II. Probably built in the late 20's.

  2. This just in is the "Flyer" for the F.A.S.T. Time Trials at the historic Santa Margarita Ranch! The event to be held on September 17th of this year is one week before Hop Up Magazine's RPM Nationals running at the same venue. This date was selected for those of you that have to travel from afar so to participate in BOTH events. During the intervening week visitors can enjoy the many aspects of San Luis Obispo County; such as: both Avila & Morro Bays; and the many wineries; breweries; distillery's and restaurants.

  5. So a couple thoughts
    It takes roughly 35 liters per hour to make 100 HP
    You can do calcs to convert to gallons or wt
    The other thought is/are those pumps are not true vacuum, they are pulse pumps typically used on a single cylinder engine
    That is not to say they will not work but if connected to a steady vacuum it will not pump

    In the coming events section on page 1 of this months banger page is a flyer for the hill climb in Auburn, CA on the same weekend as the Santa Margarita race. Is there really to banger events in one weekend in CA? The Auburn flyer is for Sept 18th which is a Sunday, and I think these events are typically on Saturdays. Any chance the Auburn flyer is from 2021? Is there actually a climb in Auburn in September?

    Looks like a 14.9 as opposed to a regular 24 HP to me.
    Careful grinding too much out as the waterways are larger than its bigger brother. Nice find, smaller bore aftermarket tuning stuff is pretty scarce, if you decide to punt it give me a shout, could be interested.

    Gasket comparisons tell the tale.

    Probably best to avoid wasting my time and just wire the electric pump.
    I ran an electric inline pump and Holley 1-4psi regulator mounted on the frame rail on a different car in the past.
    I just wired it to a switch in the cab.
    Any better ideas than that?

    I've been using the Holley 12-426 fuel pump without an inline regulator. It does not overwhelm the float/needle seat.
    If you have 12V I've added a fuel pump relay that makes the ground to the relay with the ignition switch. Mounting the pump on the frame rail puts it out of sight but requires a line down to it and then another to the carb.
    If you decide to run a regulator, I suggest a Malpassi brand regulator. It is old school in appearance and works at the lower pressure flawlessly ....I've got one on a 6V set up and it made me throw all the Holley ones in a box for the swap meet

    My experience with that vac pump is on two stroke engines, that they are designed for, the two stroke engine makes negative pressure "pulses" from the crankcase. A 4 stroke will only have vac from a manifold or carb port, that is a constant source that will go up and down in pressure, but will never pulse to move the pump diaphragm in and out.

    If you wind up installing a Winfield carb... you will likely want a regulator. The factory Winfield needle and seat design is sensitive to excess fuel pressure (greater than 2 psi). I have statically tested them to 15 psi and they don’t leak... my suspicion is that vibrations cause the float and needle to bounce, resulting in leakage. He higher the pressure, the bigger the leak!

    I have had good luck with my spring loaded needles, running a 2-5 psi pump without a regulator doesn’t seem to affect the float level anymore...

    Thanks for the responses. I’m mostly collecting parts/ideas for the winter. No time to work on anything at the moment.
    One other question..where to look for ignition?
    I’ve read about maybe using a B distributor and in the past I’ve used the newer Mallorys.
    Not sure what direction to go and anything I see for sale looks like it would need some work.
    On eBay there seems to be one guy selling some original Mallorys in various states of disrepair.
    Any suggestions on what would be currently available?

    Hi from Japan fellas. I need to replace/rebuild the water pump on my coupe but cant source a waterless one for love or money across all the normal vendors and cant get my head around $300 on eBay. By chance does anyone have a spare I can buy? Thanks.

    I have one on my blown Babbitt A motor that's sitting here collecting dust. Shipping may suck to Japan, its a year old. Has 2 miles on it..

  19. When using a side mount to drive a Magneto it appears a crank gear is used in these adaptors, question is, wouldn’t this drive the Magneto at crank revs?
    Crank gear to cam gear to crank gear, am I missing something?
    I would of thought the Mag should be driven at half crank speed like a distributor?
    Just been reading this, could someone possibly explain if and how this works?

    “Consider running the mag at twice the speed. That may get it past it's impulse speed and it would then generate a waste spark during the exhaust stroke.

    As mentioned without the impulse it may not be spinning fast enough to generate a spark as it is.”

  20. These type mags have a 2:1 internal gear reduction, no wasted spark.
    I have heard of a few trying to use a dist without much success.

  22. I was under the impression that the Model X Wico magneto was used on As driven off the cam side mount using a crank gear? They don’t have a 2:1 reduction.

    I am not aware of all the Wico models available
    These are X models and not intended for side drives

  24. Not a good shot but this is the Model X I have, your furthest away one is a JEM 1509 model I’m thinking.

    this site may help with info. it would seem some had 2:1 internal gearing.
    I don't see a problem even if you end up with wasted spark application aside from potential over revving the mag.
    But your application may not exceed that.

    Just a dumb question, is the mag that much better then a dual point Mallory? I have an early version, told it was used in commercial A engine

    If I remember right the base mount Wico XH has 2:1 internal gearing and the Wico X is 1:1 gearing.

    I received a number of pics from various people, and even was sent an original as a sample! Thank you to all!

    There was also a small number of people that inquired about manifolds, and so I have compiled a list and requested cost from the foundry.

    The numbers are back... price $600 ea. I will machine the castings, supply dimensions for block mods, and possibly supply gaskets if I can pull in a favor.

    I revised the design to match the typical Fronty water manifold for several reasons, here are a couple pics. I will be placing an order with the foundry the beginning of next week, so this is last call! If you are interested in one of these water manifolds, please let me know

    opinions are like well you know everyone has one.
    typically mags have a longer duration spark, no advance mechanism and a "P" lead to kill the ignition.
    It depends on the application and what you are looking for.
    I believe a race motor could use the power output from the mag and the faster it goes the hotter the spark. It also helps to fire other types of fuel, methanol and nitro.
    For a street car, a single point disty is fine, to simplify it you can remove the second point set from the disty.
    I run Mallory distys on my street cars, easy to tune for the motors requirements.
    I had a Scintilla mag off a Porsche some years ago, it had mechanical advance and a rev limiter. It worked nice, would idle down and would get the job done when the advance came in.
    Crazy Daddy O used to run a side drive mag on the street, maybe he will chime in here.
