So with all the threads lately discussing tune up related items, it inspired me to deal with some running issues my 1964 Chrysler convertible has developed lately. It had an exhaust leak from the exhaust crossover under the intake so that required pulling the intake to change intake gaskets. I then pulled plugs and cleaned re-gapped and reinstalled. Pulled the distributor cap and had a look at the points, checked gap and dwell and didn’t need to touch them! One of the issues that’s come up has been a lean pop through the intake when the throttle is opened quickly. When I put the dual AFB’s on the car I did absolutely nothing too them, bolted them on and drove it. I thought it was a good time to go through them. Pulled them apart and cleaned them, found one bad accelerator pump (my lean issue). Put them back together and set timing and idle and the car runs better then ever! Idles at 700 rpm. I have an old school unisyn coming I bought on eBay then I can dial the carbs in even better. As @Moriarity says “smooth as a gravy sandwich” An enjoyable day doing the maintenance these old cars require.
Ya know, when you have nothing planned, nothing that “needs to be done” and decide to do some maintenance on your ride, sure goes smoother, huh? Not like “damn, gotta change that wheel bearing” etc asap.
