Projects DB/Mopar Roadster Build or... Hodgepodge Dodge

Hey, wait a minute...

 

Hah... kinda scrawny these days.

 

With a little planning and cutting in the right places you could have enough pieces left over to build one of these.

 

This is fairly uncharted territory for me. Pushing my limits a bit, thinking I can do this. So I had to consider if I might be better off to go with another option. Something that might be a little easier than building a roadster. Something that might require a little less finessing and such major fabrication and fewer modifications.

Okay, what might those be?

- Simply restore this car
- Hot rod this car in its present configuration as a 4dr sedan
- Cut the top off and incorporate the roadster cowl to build a phaeton.
- Sell everything and buy a 1988 Chevy pickup truck to drive.
Maybe take up a hobby I know I can do. Something easy. Custom painting mailboxes or something.

No.
No.
And no.

I love all the old cars. But I've always considered roadsters to be the ultimate original hot rod. And I've wanted to build/have one my whole life. I'm really enjoying that I even have this project now. The bottom line is that I'd actually rather be working on an unfinished hot rod roadster project than to have any of the other configurations finished.

So I'm gonna stay the course. And sure, it's always the goal to finish these projects and enjoy them... and I hope I can... but if something happens and I can't, don't worry... don't feel too bad for me... know that I'm happy.

Hey Mikey, using some of it to build a depot hack or maybe a speedster is a good thought.
Except that I'm using the chassis for the roadster.

That was kind of a dumb response from me. Could certainly get another chassis. And you're right, if I cut in the right places, a roadster and another vehicle could be built from this body. Something like you posted, or even a pickup truck. Maybe I will. Or maybe I'll let somebody else do that.

We used to see more full-fendered roadsters. Previously and since, not so much. I think partly because the fenderless highboy look is so classic hot rod and I think because a good set of fenders isn't necessarily easy to find. And as someone here said recently, it takes some work to align a set of fenders.

But some of you might be like me. As soon as you see everybody and the gardener doing the same thing, you don't want it anymore. I loved the Camaros when they first came out. But soon there were millions of them and it left me cold.

Oh, I still love the looks of a roadster with no fenders. Or maybe just small bobbed and cycle style fenders. But realizing I have this nice set of uniquely Dodge fenders here, I'm going seriously consider using them.
Maybe sometimes off sometimes on. Trimmed a little with no running boards or splash aprons and they'll be pretty easy to put on and take off.

 

The only way to get what you want is to get what you want. If you want a roadster, there it is. But an 88 Chevy truck would be sweet.

 

I'm still voting for a roadster pickup...cowl, front doors and the back of the body...you already have all the parts. And, a pickup bed is a hell of a lot more useful than a stupid ol' trunk

 

Jack wants me to build a "useful pickup truck" instead of using the turtle deck.

Okay, Jack... I guess, if that's what you've got your heart set on. I'll sell the stupid old turtle deck and get a pickup truck bed...

Love the detail on those front fenders on the car. Very unique. Probably not many would guess what they are.

 

Actually, a pickup bed is the only configuration other than a turtle deck that I've seriously considered. For reasons of both aesthetics and function. Not necessarily metal construction. Wood could be nice. There'd likely be more room for battery, fuel tank, etc. Maybe even a little room to carry things. I could easily custom fit the front of the bed to the rear of the body instead of having to fit the body to the front of the turtle deck. Wheelbase is a consideration. I don't want it too long. Using the turtle deck and with the axle at the very rear, I'm already at about 116". Could easily go to 120". A pickup bed could make it a little longer still. Again, don't want it too long. Starts looking like a RR and you lose all hope of any traction.

 

@Rickybop, I just found your thread and read though from beginning to end. Glad to see you all made it through your health challenges. You have a great attitude about life that is infectious - keep sharing that along with your progress on your roadster!

I can't see as well as I used to. I didn't see the spider web grill. Please ignore that. I posted the roadster because it's one of the only full-fendered hot rod Dodge roadsters I can find. And overall, I like the silhouette.

Well, I'd like to see that box photo-chopped, as the proportions all very wrong. It's too high, & a bit too short. Otherwise, not horrible - although the w/s frame proportions aren't right either.

You can always cut the top off and go this route. Take the whole family and the dog for a ride.
Again a '27 andyou wouldn't have to fit the turtle deck or make a pick up box.
Immagine it full fendered and running boards.

I still like the turtle deck 1st, this 2nd, but nobody asked my opinion.

 

LOL. Sorry Ricky. My last 1/2 dozen builds have been pickups and deliveries.. Now all I have is a Cabriolet with a friggin' trunk...and I can't haul sheetrock with it

I think it's neat that when we say "roadster" or "roadster pickup" or maybe "T-Bucket", we know what we're talking about. A silhouette instantly comes to mind. But it's kind of a generic silhouette. Because even though being basically the same, each one is different. Well, unless you're doing a clone... and even then it's difficult to get it exactly the same LOL. But you know what I'm saying. Like the Dodge based Roadster pickup that Mikey just posted. The same as so many others, yet totally unique.

Oh and, um, no sheetrock in the roadster. In fact, almost nothing in the roadster except for me. Maybe Ann-Margret. I'd have to think about it.

 

You need to come to Iowa and get my cheaply priced 29 Plymouth U rear quarters and rear fenders. Then the talk about Pickups and Tourings can stop.
