This was Dick Landys old Dart not Snows. Unfortunately the car didn't last much longer after Gene Kidder got it.

Just wondering if you remember the AA/FD dragster named the "Beast from the East" along with who drove and owned the dragster back in the 60s
I don't think I have ever seen a photo of it.

I did see it race at Dover Drag Strip in the mid 60s

Am I correct in thinking, that if you were to stand there today, you'd be looking at the Kroger in Speedway?

I had never heard of the Beast From The East so I Googled it and found the above photos.

Is that front engine installed backwards to drive the front axle?

I don’t know who’s in the seat but the car came from the fertile mind of Chet Herbert.

  19. Lefty Mudersbach drove and tuned the tripple. Didn't last long. Not enough HP gain to off set the weight of the 3rd engine.

    Hello,

When we saw the Tapia Brothers/Beardon Hoffman “D” Dragster in action, we were impressed with the quickness of the small SBC motor/low chassis combo. If you look at the records set in 1959, starting with the A dragster class, the AA class, the B dragster class there are some big guns setting top time and low e.t. almost every week.

Then here is class “D” with the low slung, Tapia Brothers Dragster winning almost every week.

Back in So Cal during the late 50’s and early 60s, drag racing was still developing with new ideas always coming to the fore front. The Tapia Brothers were well known in the early drag racing scene at Lions Dragstrip. They built a low slung modified Chassis Research frame, use an injected Chevy and ran circles around most of the gas dragsters in the classes during the early times. Involved as they were, family and friends gathered at their house and did more prep work every week.

It was a gathering of friends and family to do what was necessary to keep the winning streak alive. Their exploits, when we were able to film the sleek dragster, were epic in our book. It did not take a top gas class A/Gas dragster with a Hemi to win and continue winning in all types of eliminations.

@65pacecar I never got to see the Sachs car in person, but in all the pictures I've seen of it, it always has a clean look about it.

    Hello,

The White Comet was the beginning of the road into the funny car world. It was a modified stock bodied car with the motor in the original place. Not set back like Altered Coupes, but what anyone could get at the Sachs and Sons Lincoln-Mercury Dealership or any Mercury Dealership across the nation. It was the tie in with factory cars that made this drag racing class so popular back then.

The car was strictly stock bodied, but it was a full race car with a 671 supercharged motor… definitely not from the factory. The tie in was that ordinary Joe in the stands would look at the Chrisman Comet and say… “Wow, that is just like my White Comet…” and be a proud Mercury owner. YRMV
