I bought this transmission, being told it was a 1939. I ***umed it had the "BIG 3" FORK". Upon a little cleanup and taking the top off, found it has the smaller big fork. I know the car it came out of, pretty sure it was the original ******, looks like a double detent ????????? Did both styles come with 1939 cars ??? OR ??? Help an old guy out !!!! I have added a photo of the stamped number on the bell 9/6/22
have to see inside to know for sure what ya got. early style syncro's will have the fork slot in the center, like slicing a bagel, late style have the fork slot on one end
The plate/housing number should tell you the year. I think Mac Van pelts site has them listed. I also recall an early and later ‘39 , but just from reading about it.
I believe Budget36 is correct that there are some early '39 transmissions that have double detent and smaller fork in place of what you might have thought would be the larger fork.
Zooming in it appears to be 18-4788 on the serial number. That puts it at a 39 case... IF I'm reading it right.
Ford used the old style synchro's in many of the '39 cars to use up existing stock. You cannot tell from the serial number, you have to look inside.
