Don't you mean 'John Player Special' not Gary Player? I had trouble finding a JPS livery that wasn't OT. Here's one of the Lotus airplanes from roughly the HAMB era:

I'm a bit biased, but I've always liked the '52 Cummins Indy 500 car.

“…Interesting tidbits of note: I have a real lack of drag cars in my collection…”

    upload_2022-6-29_4-13-17.png Atts Ono

    Hello,

Atts Ono was a good friend from our junior high school days. He and I played on an amateur basketball team of similar ages. He was the point guard and I was the center/forward. He was a level 1 college prospect and the local high school coaches were "gaga" over his skills.

As he got to High School, he decided to be a machinist and stay involved in drag racing. He helped in our 1940 Willys Coupe build with his skills and ideas.
    upload_2022-6-29_4-14-37.png
Everybody listened when he gave design help and specific instructions. When we were ready for competition, he was the pit crew boss in the staging prep for each race. He was standing next to me as we watched my brother make his last run in the 1940 Willys Coupe on that fateful night of August 1960.

Over the years that followed, he was quietly building his own 1940 Willys Coupe from the ground up, doing as much of the work as possible. The 1966 Popular Hot Rodding Magazine article explains a lot. It was just one of those backyard garage builds that we followed and helped when we could.

It turned out that quality machining of spare aluminum blocks from the Long Beach Douglas Aircraft Surplus Yard went to good use, all over this outstanding show quality 1940 Willys Coupe.

His brother told me that the red 40 Willys Coupe was sold in 1971 to a Midwest dragracer. It was shipped from Long Beach to ???? So, Midwest folks, a build like this can’t be sitting in a garage or barn for all of this time… Where is it or has it been so modified we would not recognize it any longer?

It has been a difficult time searching for our own 292 cubic inch 671 supercharged SBC motor we sold in 1961 to a Midwest racer, also shipped out of our backyard garage. No one has clue or any idea of the location of our 671 SBC motor. So, a full race prepped immaculate, Willys Gas Coupe should be no problem… should it?

  21. Dutch. He was given the grille shell insert to paint, and didn't have reference for top and bottom... hence the head upside down.

Also... and I don't want to get into this that much yet... but the art he painted was very closely based on someone else's art. So close that I don't know that I would call that upside down head his or not...

  23. [IMG] I remember back in 1966 standing just above Hansgen Turn. At Bridgehampton NY. track early morning and in the mist seeing the two winged Jim Hall Chaparrals being trailered across the start/finish track section into the pit area on open flatbed trailers. It was there first appearance.
