Check Out the Weird Times from 1959 . . . The strip had converted to 3/16 of a mile due to the short shut-down length. I believe no one else did the same.
April 1955 Hello, So Cal has gone through a lot of change from the 50s and it was relevant to us growing up in the Westside of Long Beach. In our secure area, we stayed within our boundaries as much as we could. But the surrounding cities also grew during this time period. For example, we all know that the city of Pico Rivera was once owned by the mayor of Los Angeles, Pio Pico, as our history books noted. But to give him some notoriety, it was called the city of Pico. After, guess who? old Friday Art "Grohs Texaco in Rivera, California ( before ‘Pico’ and ‘Rivera’ became one city in 1958) sponsored a few very nice drag cars." (By 1960, our Long Beach High School played in a championship football game against a well known High School from the city of "Pico Rivera.") Jnaki "The first shot is of Groh's 32 5 window coupe photographed (by Norm Grudem) around 1953. It featured big n’ little whitewalls, knee action shocks and some crazy twin push bars in the back. Check out the triple straight pipes (flathead, I presume) peeking out from under the frame!" July 1955
Bud Roche and Don Mattison ran the Guzler out of Evergreen Park, IL. The big man in the second photo looks to be John Kranenberg, he drove and worked on the car. Kranenberg then went to work with the Greek and later moved to the west coast.
