    Hey L,

The implied look may have been the Green radiator fluid stain on the guy's White Levis and not just because her hair would blow all over the place once running down the street.

Despite being a "bubble top" the girl will get her outfit dirty, which she clearly is thinking about and will also be cold running down the street inside of that T-Bucket. Being driven in a lowered T-Bucket in San Diego many years ago, it was windy, cold and even my short hair looked like a blender took over.

My wife refused to ride in it with us, even if it was a short ride around the local streets. She would not go in my place, either. Her long hair would have looked like one of these Gothic looking characters with their hair on a bad morning wake up call.

That is why we always stuck to a Ford Sedan Delivery, an enclosed El Camino, a station wagon, or a cool sporty car for our road trips. Even though, she is a die hard convertible So Cal girl with thoughts of a sunny day and the top down cruising in mind. YRMV

When I was a young man I had one girl complain I spent more time and money on my car than I did her, I explained heck yeah, the time and money I spend on my car I will get back in both milage and cash when I go to get rid of it. Shortly after that she moved on, at which point I knew I spent my money wisely.

I got lucky. My wife Sandy said she enjoyed the smell of grease and oil. The couple of times I had to pull over to work on the car, she was fine just to sit quietly and read a book. I remember it was a country road, hardly any traffic. Warm sunny day. The hood opened forward on the old Hudson. So I'm sitting on the fender right in front of Sandy. Took me a while to get the points squared away. But Sandy was cool. I looked up at one point, "You okay?"
    Her with a smile, "Yup."

I don't believe she owned any white go-go boots.

The previous girlfriend, on the other hand... informed me that I was "allowed" to have only one old car at a time.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

My late friend Jay used to break down regularly with his old Vincent when he had the wife on board. She went into the fields nearby to braid wreaths of the flowers she found while he reset the points or some other shit to make it go again. After years of frustrating breakdowns he finally met me and we got the bike going properly but the lady was gone. "No more wraiths" he said.

I met a girl, asked her out for coffee, went to pick her up with my motorcycle and sidecar and never saw her again.

On one of my first dates, I pulled into her parent's driveway with my '56 Chevy and the exhaust pipe blew a hole. Her mother thought the car was too dangerous for her daughter to ride in because of the noise. I explained to my date what the problem was and she got me a #10 can, some bailing wire and shears from her dad's barn. I cut the can up and rolled the sheet metal around the exhaust pipe & wired it in place. I started the car up and showed her mom it was "fixed" and she let us go.
My date & I have been married for 56-1/2 years now.

My racing buddy had a sprint car, the 24' enclosed trailer for it, the quad to push it in the pits, enough spares for the season. When he met her, she had 2 horses: she still has one horse (the other one died): I saw a couple of old used "tear-offs" in his garage last year...

When I was in HS the van scene was just starting. Many girls weren't allowed to date guys with vans. But I had a '65 Falcon 2 dr. wagon. Just as much room in the back as a van but no issues with her parents. Plus the wagon was a hell of a lot quicker and more fun to drive than an old used up phone company Econoline with a 170 and 3 on the tree.

The 1st date with my future wife was to go on a ride around town.

I worked at a gas station, I spent a lot of nights after I got off work to fix her car so she could go to work and school, while we were dating. She drove her car hard, and I kept it running for her.

After we were married, we had dirt track race cars, hot street cars, and daily drivers that always got us to work and back home.

When we had kids, she always had a dependable car to haul the kids around. After racing ended (I quit and was not forced to). I built a street rod. It was a family event, we did a lot of car shows and belonged to a great, very active car club she really enjoyed. Over the years, she has bought car parts so we could do something car related, and she has gotten her hands dirty a few time helping me do something on a car.

Cars have always been part of our lives, and she has been an active participant with me all along. We have 2 cars and a pickup right now. Her car is something for her to drive around, the other car and the pickup are both hot rods. We still love to ride around together. 46 years of marriage and still going. At the end of this week, the coupe, my wife and I will be doing an 800 mile road trip.
I couldn't imagine doing this without her.

  23. I may have told this before in another thread, can't remember.
The first date with my future wife, I picked her up in my 4-speed, 409/409 Chev powered 53 Ford. I had a fire extinguisher mounted to the floor in front of the shifter, she saw that and asked "Does your car catch on fire often?"

Maybe Mom was implying she’d bury you in it before letting you go out with her daughter.

My relationship with my wife began with me asking her if she liked convertibles...

  27. Years ago a real good friend of mine had a Mr. Gasket shifter in his car. He went on a first date with this gal and she kept eyeing the shifter. Finally she asked him, "Why do they call you Mr. Casket?"

My sweetie! Thirty five years of putting up with my addiction. Not so much on working on them but always ready for a ride, especially a shore run or anyplace involving a casino. One of the good ones... ( Yeah she was posing with the roadster).
