pretty simple really, when all of my friends were going on vacations, buying new boats, buying motorcycles and fancy new pickups and things. I was spending every last nickel on old car crap and working on old cars instead of going out and having fun.... for decades.....

Ya know while I was working on the body for the futurian I kinda built up an immunity to the fiberglass itching. I ground and sanded on it every day for quite a while and it really didn’t bother me much. Then years later when I shaved the door handles on my corvette the little bit of grinding and sanding really seemed to bother me. I guess I just wasn’t used to it....

A friend and myself were lucky to have visited Mark's home recently. I had the same feeling. Very generous with time, answering questions about item details, demonstrating cool Von-Dutch machine, showing operation of some of the "automatic" features of Miss Elegance. What a treat!

And, yeah, "puts your mind in a spin"? While focusing on the story being told about one item, my roving Marty Feldman eye would see something else and tell my brain ... "ask about that thing next".

Got the grand tour, but not wanting to overstay our welcome and with a 3 hr drive ahead, it was time to go. And it circles back to the generous side of Mark. Without going into specifics, it reminded me a little bit of American Graffiti, when Kurt and the Pharoahs were at the soda fountain business, with the pinball machines getting broken into. Owner of shop says "I hope you boys will be taking a little bit of this place with you", Kurt says "oh, I think we already have".

    Except we didn't steal anything.

Maybe it was more like when Milner was dropping off Carol at her parents house and he gave her the piston shift knob from the coupe. She says, "Wow! It's almost like we're going steady or something. I can't wait to tell all my friends."

Well, that sounds kinda weird. I mean, there was no kiss or anything.

Anyway, Big Thanks @Moriarity for sharing your passion of this great hobby with others. We were honored to get to visit.

Any car parts in the kitchen? Last time I was there the 10 year old kitchen had never been used.

Nope, didn't ask him to peel out either. Didn't want him to get rug burns ... literally.

I have a plan.... follow me on this one.... He buys an old Lance camper, like the old ones that fit in an old pick-up bed and when not being used are stored using legs or stilts on the four corners. He can have a small concrete pad put in the backyard and put the camper there. Use the garden hose and outdoor plug for power for the hot plate and washing.
Then make the house an open concept that is popular today. Shitcan all of the kitchen walls and all of the useless stuff like sink, fridge, and so on. He can still have the upper cabinets for spark plug wires, points, condensers, and the like. :). There are always options.

I want to say it’s true, there is a custom heaven. And you get a door prize at the Pearly Gates!

My brother, his son, and myself were able to get the complete tour this Saturday when we were in town for the Twin Cities Roadster Swap Meet. Mark was gracious enough to show us the whole collection, as well as the back room where he keeps the “junk”.

Plus, I received my own set of spark plug wires, which is good because there are none left available because Mark owns them ALL.

I found his collection super interesting because he collects many of the same things that I do. Vintage Stewart-Warner gauges, Eelco stuff of every variety still new in the package, most every engine topped with Strombergs, and a forests worth of magazines. Just like my garage. Except all of his is neat, clean, and orderly. Totally unlike my garage.

Thanks again Mark for the time you gave us Iowans, and we’ll see you at the next swap meet.

All I can say about Marks collecting is when is buying something from you in our market place and he’s been looking a long time, he is a very fair man to deal with.
