Dean complimented Jake's car in his original post. He simply disagreed with Jake's choice of how to stop it. Sometimes people disagree. It's okay.

And I disagree with his disagreement.

Where I take issue with the "I've been doing this longer, so I know better" and the "he's forgotten more than you'll ever know." Elitist At***ude.

You old guys have this "I know better at***ude." And in the same breath complain about the death of the hobby, not realizing that your elitist at***ude is part of what is killing it.

But hey, what the **** do I know...I'm just a young punk, who's daily driven on mechanical brakes, and been doing it for over a decade and uncountable thousands of miles.

That is one real nice looking period correct Roadster! If you are into details check out the headlight mounts. Thanks for posting it Pete!

    Hi Dean,
Jake's car has 1934 brakes on it. They have 12" cast iron drums, ( same as the early Ford hydraulic brakes) They are a much better brake than the 11" steel drum model A brakes.
My all stock '34 Woody would stop just fine, & it's a heavy car.
Mechanical brakes, when properly set up & maintained will work just fine.

Jake was really disappointed when he fired the fully rebuilt 4-Port Riley, for the first time & water came streaming out the exhaust, (cracked block).
He really wanted to get the car on the road, so he has subs***uted a Chevy Nova 4 banger, until the Riley can be repaired/rebuilt.

Would I want to drive the McMullen Roadster with mechanical brakes? Likely not.
How about the Jacobs Roadster? Absolutely...

  8. I cant beleive the commentary about the brakes. Cant we just enjoy the fact that a guy most of us have been inspired by built ANOTHER *****in car?!?

Lets celebrate the fact this is the latest of Jakes - who has built an incredible array of cars over the years as well as being involved with some incredible builds and restorations - Pwood - i put you in there alongside Jake with these too.

Lets celebrate and compliment Jake on the vision and talent to build yet ANOTHER cool car.

The car is rad! The ******* match over brakes is not...
Please, can we just enjoy the build for what it is?

    Friends,
Life is too short for argument, let alone arguing on the internet. Every thing you don’t agree with, does not always require a response.

Jake has built another good rod. I bet it’s fun to drive with that banger.

You know Jake understands the limits of every part on this car, not his first rodeo.

My first A speedster had mechanical brakes and was great in Durango. Went to the first Goodguy’s show in Scottsdale and stop and go traffic at rush hour resulted in brake fade and blowing through a stop light laying on the horn! If I never took my A’s beyond the Four Corners area, I’d have no issues with mechanical brakes.

Regardless of the choice of brakes, that car is timeless!

    I don't know a damn thing, apparently.
Sorry I offended so many folks that know so much more than me.
    Lesson learned.

Old brakes fade when they fade. They don't know if they are mechanically or hydraulically operated. But, the mechanical ones take a bit more strength than the hydraulic ones. And the ones with rotors without power seem to take even more. But, if you're in good health, you can handle them all.

Dean, I'm the one that should apologize to you. Your experience with mechanical brakes is valid too. Just as I believe mine is. And I shouldn't have made such a big deal about it.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on mechanicals, but I'd definitely like to add, and I think we can all agree that they take much more work to maintain and "get right", besides it's not like an upgrade to juice brakes is a bad idea.

Like some others I don't see how hydraulic instead of mechanical brakes would help with the fading issue & I'm in the mech-brakes-work-fine camp, with the caveat that you must adjust them regularly as part of your maintenance routine... to me that just seems like one of the idiosyncrasies of owning an old *** car, like the Model A's 20-something grease zerks that have to be hit every 500 miles, so I don't mind doing it, but someone who did it for a long time probably doesn't find it so charming.

It's definitely not worth ****ing heads over... just a matter of opinion & convenience.

    Very inspiring build.
Post War builds are getting very common, to put it nicely. I’m seeing the beginnings of a Pre War build phase. Way to go, Jake!
Can I ***ume cracked banger blocks aren’t nearly as common as the new/complicated V8 flathead blocks?

Yes, had to go back for another look and noticed the folding windshield posts I missed on other views, tire to rear wheel well fitment is also perfect.
