Yep, I was there cruisin with everyone until the beach cities pretty much closed it down. Mostly we hung out at the Bob’s Big Boy in Playa Del Rey where the street races were set up. We raced down Pershing and met back up at Bob’s. I had a chopped black ‘32 5w with a bbc, Halibrands and slicks.
I met the only gal I ever considered (back then) marrying right there at Bob’s but my biggest rival, Randy stole her away and married her. Fun times.
The Ruby’s cruise night was where I got the Beach City Bob handle. I had a small custom header & chassis shop in Redondo Beach and some of my customers would show up at Ruby’s. They introduced me as beach city Bob and after a while it just stuck.

Well come on back Beach City Bob we need you back and join the fun !! If not Friday then next season ! Id like to present to King Harbor Assoc and Redondo PD an organized title for request a legal street takeover at least calendar one event for next year . The owner of the brown 'Vette in this thread seems to be a top dog lawyer and am going to talk to him Friday if possible . We need to put LEGAL into street racing I've always believed in it and my high school years in Torrance we created ( not legal ) Toledo Raceway with a can of white paint so if I was once involved it's time to be involved again only 2023 style !
    I can't keep it back -
Our best racing was on foggy nites the fog deadened loud exhaust noise and the cops never came out in the fog and the oxygen level was screaming !!

We’ll be there next season with one of the hot rods, for sure.
I understand that there’s also a small informal cruise on Saturday mornings at Hawthorne Blvd and Artesia (?), for those who don’t feel like driving down to the Donut Derelicts’ deal down south.
We used to go cruise from Harvey’s Broiler to Frisco’s and back once in a while too. I really liked that one. Great cruising scene out there for a while. Don’t know what it’s like now.

It's building back from complete desolation and I would say there are three regular South Bay meets then one on the hill and the gals at Zimmerman's are trying their hand ( $$ ) at privateering car shows and private club meets but alot of these events are slow going and I believe the cars and the heart for it all is there it's organizing and liability that is keeping it from being successful again and I am hoping that with the new found problems and deaths and injuries with the illegal street takeover scenes that government open up the history books and look at all of the true culture surrounding our involvement with cars . Government is trying to control transportation thus they want to ignore us but it's the kids that are taking over intersections why can't you just give it to them organized with safety and food trucks and t shirts and dash plaques .
And how many garages in South Bay with a Special Car in it . I say one out of three to five .
That's a lot of car shows man .
Yes the car show on Hawthorne/Artesia it attracts ALL car owners no hooplah no DJ just car people getting to know each other and showing and learning about cars . I can happily say I've seen a few people born in this century there also as it is widely accessible and no strings attached in an open atmosphere . People here comment on it weather they are car buffs or not . We are a culture within every socially motivated culture . It's a happy thing and we need more of what we are to show everyone .

Bob.. I do both a few times a year. A few weeks ago I started at Donut Derelicts at 5 am, left at 6:45 and drove to Torrance and stayed until 9:00. Left and went to Net Cruze and Coffee in Westchester on Centinela and stayed until noon. Finished my 3 coffee stops at Inglewood Park Cemetery to visit my folks…living in So Cal it can be never ending if you want it to. 80724B8C-6DB3-4C40-8037-604E592BF0FF.jpeg

Hope your day is well I thought it would be nice to say that the the weather for tomorrow is going to be nice as the afternoon winds have now calmed to a breeze and the everlasting South Bay Beach Area Marine Layer ( low cloud cover ) may roll in between 3pm and 6pm but it won't affect much as the sun hanging low will match and keep it in control and I expect the sun to shine as it did yesterday afternoon and everyone have fun . See you there !

Cars start coming into Donut Derelicts at 5:00 AM. It’s zoo from 6:00-7:00 and cleared out by 8:00.
Torrance for me is Hawthorne Blvd at Artesia and it starts at 7:00. I moved from Torrance to Fountain Valley in 1971. I know of no other happenings except what’s on the SoCalCarCulture site.

I’m curious about the Westchester cruise that you mentioned. I grew up in Westchester. Great hot rod town. You mention Centinela and I think of Dinah’s restaurant and the long gone Hamburger Handout (17 cent hamburgers vs McDonald’s 19 cent ones), running around in the Hughes fields and playing in the creek there. The 405 freeway took a lot of that area.

It’s listed on socalcarculture as a once a month gathering. My Uncle was a commercial artist and worked for the owner of the Handout and the accompanying appliance store during the 50’s. All the hand painted ads and ‘sale” signage was his work. He also lived in the mobile home park that was attached to it. It was at Sepulveda and Centinela.
This gathering is at La Tijera and Centinela in Ladera center. All of that was lima bean fields when I grew up, I lived next to Centinela park. Where La Tijera met La Cienega I believe was a Clock restaurant.

I’m planning on Redondo at the closed ruby’s Friday night; the last one listed for the summer. About 40 miles for me..

In the triangle at LaTijera and La Cienega was Pann’s restaurant. As of a few years ago it was still there. Many memories from Pann’s, it was my old GFs parents favorite restaurant and we went there often. IDK if it was the Clock before.
We played a lot in the fields near Manchester and Florence Ave, built forts, wallowed around in the creek. When they started the 405 freeway, we rode our go karts on the smooth new concrete.

Bob, looks like I’ll eat a little Crow. Panns is at 6710 La Tijera and built in 1958 and still there. The Clock was at 6821 La Tijera and built in 1951. It was not in the triangle and on the opposite side of the street. It didn’t last too long before becoming an “Upholstered Sewer” call the Kings X then torn down. I found a photo of it on the net under martinturnbull.com > Clock restaurant.
Our family never went to Panns.

    Hi Everyone ,

I hate drama as what I saw this morning was an electric traffic sign on a trailer parked at the curb where 190th ( aka Herondo ) crosses PCH due west .
The sign said LOUD EXHAUST PROHIBITED .
Also the trailer on Artesia Blvd has been there for a few months but this one is recently staged so you know how to cruise it on in , I do expect Redondo Police to enforce anyone truly deserving it's not a real problem with us but just so ya know . Do enjoy your day and do smile at the officer she just may be pretty and have a couple college degrees !

I think the main problem that the beach cities face, noise-wise, comes from low rider Harleys with straight pipes and/or fishtails. On the weekends especially, groups of highly customized bikes invade Point Fermin and sometimes caravan through Palos Verdes, Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan beaches. Palos Verdes has been actively siting loud exhaust for many years.
I got pulled over in my roadster in PV. They actually did a decibel check which it passed easily with full length exhaust and Smittys. They were set up like a DUI checkpoint. I wonder if they are still doing that.

No worries for me on that point but I can understand HD’s and RR’s with the lack of exhausts. Big block “sound alikes” are irritating to me but I do carry ear plugs.

And then there's the Torrance Stuffheads . A doghair on the sidewalk they off to city hall . Think I mentioned the knocks we would get on the door in late '70s - " Son we got ya for 158 ft yesterday and we took out the distance between shifts to make it fair so just sign ... "

If you see a Crosley, a two tone green 55 Nomad with a 4 spd, or a blue GTX, you’re probably talking to my old friend Chuck. Say Hi for me….
