@curbspeed ive seen those firestones available from… maybe Coker and someone else. They are/ were being made but for like 18” and bigger wheels no 16’s

    - the rear anyhow. The front I’m not sure. Could be motorcycle. I recall a website that sells blocklys also carrying these but for the life of me can’t remember the site

Agree. The paint color is perfect. I'd love to see this car in person.

    That is a beautiful Roadster.

I'm going to wade into the mechanical brake discussion because I'm stupid and I dont know when to keep my mouth shut...

Seems to me, when everything else is the same and set up right, the main issue with mechanical brakes is to get the biting points the same on all the wheels.
Fade can happen if the drums/shoes get too hot, but not by boiling the fluid, because there isn't any...

And here is something really cool, that was my actual reason for posting this.

Its the cable on the outside of a pre-war Bugatti which runs between two sprockets to give it the same action you get out of a diff in a rear end.
It has one on each side ( and another one in the middle, I think, to even out the force from side to side )
Complicated, but it does everything fluid would...

I,m old and not tech savvy, can someone change a couple of the colour pics of Jake's car to black and white. It looks great in colour but I reckon in would look sensational in black and white.

  20. Ya know Dean, some guys just like to blow their own horns, having never had to rely on their builds in daily traffic with all the idiots on the road today. Since many here bow to the Henry statue, you'd think they would realize Ford changed to hydraulic brakes for a reason! I agree with your statement 100%, having driven both brake types over the years. Not only do I NOT want to rely on them, I cringe at the thought of someone driving around me may be relying on them. The key to mechanical brakes working properly is maintenance, and plenty of it. No thanks... I prefer fluid in a closed system that doesn't need adjustment every 500 miles.
As to Jake's use of them, I don't know how much or under what cir***stances he drives this car, so maybe in a controlled environment he's comfortable. But.......
It's funny, but just like teenagers, some people refuse to listen to someone trying to teach and have them learn from our own experience. Your wisdom and experience go a long way with me!

Considering that I'm the pro-mechanical brakes one here, in typical Washington state p***ive aggressive style, this seems directed at me. And once again for the kids late to the party...

I HAVE DAILY DRIVEN MECHANICAL BRAKE CARS IN SEATTLE WASHINTON FOR ABOUT 27,000 MILES. I HAVE DRIVEN TO PORTLAND AND BELLINGHAM. THIS IS ALL WITHIN THE LAST TEN YEARS. RAIN OR SHINE. SNOW EVEN.

So yeah. I do rely on my cars in daily traffic. I know 100% that you are wrong. Fact.

So...If it scares ya, better stay off the road.

    By the way..

How many miles do you have on mechanical brakes?

  22. Enough to know I don't want to trust my life on them! And..... just why do you think FoMoCo ditched them for hydraulics?

This thread was started by an eminent member of the hot rod community in celebration of another eminent member of the hot rodding community's latest build.

It now seems to have spiralled into a dummy spitting match as to the components of the build itself.

If ever I've seen a reason to hang my head in shame about the actions of members here, it is now.

IMHO this thread needs to be closed .... now .... before someone else pipes up and tell us that there is something else wrong with this build ...... please Mr Moderator close it.

Like I've said before, just because YOU don't know how to set them up, doesn't mean I don't.

It's almost like you guys don't understand physics.

And I know why he made the switch. Compe***ion and cost. Ford was one of the last to go hydraulic. In fact I think cost cutting was the main reason he was convinced to change. Juice brakes are cheaper and easier to ***emble on the production lines. You're mistaken if you think Henry was motivated by anything other than cost cutting. That man was cheap.

But you knew that since you're such an expert, right?

If Henry had his way, we'd still be driving model Ts.

Once again, He did not make the switch for any other reason than to stay compe***ive with the compe***ion and cost cutting. If it was about safety, he would have equipped Ford products with Bendix brakes, not just the Lincolns.

The funniest part of all this, is your claims of how yours and others experience matters, yet you completely blow off someone who is many times more experienced than you on the subject.

I know I'm part of the p***ing match, but you just touched on part of my issue with this whole argument.

    My 2 main things are:

    1) Jake knows what he is doing, you guys are acting like you know better than one of the best and important guys in the game. Like you could do better.

    2) for us banger guys, this is a pretty important build. A huge name in the industry built a banger powered car(I know it has the chev II in it currently. Still a 4 banger technically). Banger cars don't exactly get a lot of attention from big name builders these days, even though ya'll should be showing respect for your predecessors.
you treat bangers like feable old men. Instead of recognizing that they used to be the baddest thing on the road and everything that came after has the 4 cylinder to thank for it.... Mechanical brakes and all.

Jake has always built his cars with a eye on simplicity and in doing so they speak volumes, this car is no different. HRP

It's a neat roadster, Thank you Jake for sharing with us here... don't know why we need to debate mechanical over hydraulic brakes.. my 36 has hydraulics ... what ever stops is fine.. and do the upkeep to work properly.. all good

It may be my imagination, but I think mechanical vs. hydraulic brakes creates as much agitation as radial vs. bias ply tires and cowl steering! :D All imagination aside, it is a beautiful build!
