I got a burst of ambition today and cleaned up the shop. Not spotless, but a lot of stuff that was just on the floor is up in the new (to me) shelving unit, some stuff that didn't need to be in there is in the back barn and the woodshed, and I moved the lift to the back. It's just tall enough that I can't drive over it with all the cars, but the Diamond T, will with no problem, and I store it in the that back bay.
I wanted to get things tucked away and tidy for winter, I'm happy with this level of "clean". The T'bird is completely uncovered for the first time in years, I'd been piling stuff on it like a shelf. It's up next to (finally) get painted and finished. About time. 5C8160E7-72A9-4267-9C82-29BC0E3BC94E.jpeg A7F941BE-A10C-4F9E-B293-EF0DFF96F2FF.jpeg E7007596-64F4-46CE-8670-F66EEFFB8016.jpeg

Same as all of the above. Cleaned up the garage for winter and to fit in the new daily driver ot vehicle, and the snowblower. Now it looks good but I can't find stuff, and don't want to get it messed up again! Can't win...

Forgot to ask: flynbrian48 has Hell started to freeze over yet. Kalamazoo will be next...
Spent 8 1/2 years in A^2 back in the 90s. That garage was unbeatable and unusable in the winter except for keeping snow off of the cars, well half of them.

  9. My shop looks like a bomb went off,I started cleaning uo and rearranging a few months ago and then I was hit head on in my daily pickup and I was also doing some remodeling in the house, everything that ended up in the shop is piled high waiting on getting settled up with the insurance company and find another truck, what a mess. HRP

  10. A clean work space is essential but, elusive. Good work What got me was looking at that lift. I've only seen post lifts or motorcycle versions. I've never seen anything that small. What is the capacity? Enquiring minds want to know.

One of my very productive and very talented friends always says. " there should be nothing in the shop except tools", while I agree that would be good, it aint happnin here ! But, good for you Brian, a clean space is a nice thing for sure !

    Nice going good to see.
I was thinking maybe I could just build another one next to mine.
Maybe She would like it behind it.
If I don't do something, I might need to sleep there.

Looks like a BENDPAK but only ever seen the TMG scissor lift with wheels. Definitely a back saver!

I bought it when I was doing the DeSoto wagon two years ago. It's GREAT. I don't do heavy mechanical work any longer (transmission removal and so on), but bodywork, brakes, etc. A two post lift has two disadvantages, the two posts. This scissor lift is perfect for body work, brake work, suspension, tire changes. It'll lift 6,000, I'm limited in the height by the 9' ceilings in my shop, but I can get rocker panels at eye level. VERY heavy, it was all my 35 HP compact tractor would lift to move. Granted, the lift is in the way when doing exhaust systems, but I have an old Blackhawk air over hydraulic bumper lift that will lift 36" that works well for that. ;)
This one I bought new from a retail equipment store in Grand Rapids, they'd gotten it for a customer who wanted only a blue one, not the black brand they carry. Then he backed out. I bought it a their cost, $1,500, retail was around $2100. The guy wanted it out of his showroom, they'd had it for almost a year. I jumped on it. A lifesaver for me.
Edit: I have to say that this thing has paid for itself many times over. I used it for the wagon build, as a frame table building the roadster, and countless times for little jobs where it was easier to pull a car over the lift than drag a floor jack around. I COULD have used it for a brake job on my wife's daily, but the car was already at a body shop for some heavy collision damage, it needed all 4 rotors, pads, one caliper was replaced, and I wanted to spend some beautiful fall days enjoying the roadster and the wagon. Had I done it myself, it'd have paid for half the cost of the lift with that one job. There's more to life than working on a car, I've discovered. ;)

A clean shop is never a permanent condition, and its amazing how quickly it can revert back to normal. :)

Mines waiting for me to do the latest "put away" and organize the projects in the proper places. Wifey wants to go to the mall, think I'll just go with her.......you know how dangerous malls can be these days. :D

  19. My upside down shop is the bane of my existence.
I have to MAKE, myself rationalize that it’s OK to use some of the available shop time to CLEAN UP AND ORGANIZE EVEN THOUGH IT’s TIME TAKEN AWAY FROM A PROJECT JOB!!!!
    So far little results. DAMN!

I've got a lot of small house cleaning projects that need to be done in the shop. Like sorting the buckets with nuts, bolts, washers, and other who know whats. And organizing the parts shelves, etc. I keep telling myself its a good rainy day project. Now all I need is some rain here in SoCal but lately that hasn't been happening. But given the current situation in Florida I guess I shouldn't complain. Weather forecast looks like it will finally be below 100 so maybe I'll get on with it.

Shop clean up is usually a rainy or snowy day event for me. Seeing how we’re in the middle of a drought and it isn’t winter, it’s a disaster right now.

  23. Shop clean for me consists of re-arrangement of organized chaos. Too many projects, not enough space. And being a little bit of a hoarder doesn't help.

To the OP, even if you cant get to it all, at least get that overhead painted white and put up some LED lights. You will thank yourself every time you flip the switch on.
Looking good, keep at it. Good Luck.

Despite having most tooling on wheels, wall cabinets, etc., my 24X32 shop had become like working in a rubic cube. I needed and wanted an addition for several years. Well, last fall I bit the bullet and poured a 25X24 slab for an addition off the back. Since I built 95% of it by myself, I am just now finishing it up.

Every time I clean the shop and pit everything away I can never find anything. So I just gave up and been happy ever since.

I get depressed when I walk into a well organized and clean shop that’s 1/2 the size of mine.
I feel like the fighter who said “I coulda been a contender “.

    Hello,

We have always had two car garages from the rental places to our own homes. They were good for covered work on the daily drivers and the project cars. One space was even a narrow two side open carport. Luckily, my wife had a small sporty car at the time. So, the workspaces were what we had to endure along with the daily drivers.

    upload_2022-10-24_5-21-38.png

When a project was in hand, both daily driver cars had to be moved out to the parking areas of the street. If the project was not complete or it was going to take a longer amount of working time for repairs, replacements and adjustments, then the daily drivers suffered outside in the sometimes, nasty salty, windy, foggy weather.

    upload_2022-10-24_5-22-9.png

At the time, I did not mind it having a smaller garage. But, once a two car garage was utilized for a designated workspace, “stuff” started accumulating on the wall racks, counters and under shelf floor space. Sometimes, it was hard to get out of a narrow two car garage with the “stuff” creeping into the available space.

    Jnaki

Over the years of having a bare wall to the studs, plus wall shelves stuffed to the brim and utilizing the overhead cross beams for longer stuff, we were heading for disaster. Luckily, we had severe earthquakes during this time and that was an eye opener. The “stuff” just came tumbling down and covered the concrete floor like we have seen in grocery store aisles during “the after” photos.

What was on the floor? Well, just about everything from tools to sealed paint cans and a couple of surfboards. The project hot rod did not get damaged, but the side where the racks and shelves were, happened to take the brunt of “stuff” on the floor.

Now, my wife and I have thinned things out for a clean looking garage area for the two daily drivers and a good, clean workbench plus cabinets to keep things in place. When the coastal underground crack starts to do its business and we will eventually be an island with the inland portions of the So Cal areas, now beach front resorts. Ha! Clean is in and we still have work areas, if we decided to get another project hot rod/daily driver. YRMV
