Erected in 1921 at the corner of Penn Avenue and Butler Street, “The Doughboy” honored WWI veterans from the city’s sixth ward. (picture from 1937) More than 20,000 people turned out at the unveiling of Allen G. Newman's bronze statue, according to the Post-Gazette. But you’ll notice that between 1937 and today, there have been changes to the Lawrenceville statue. That is Merit Meadows, and her father owned a sizable Pontiac dealership in Portland. My friend Jack Gillis was in charge of preparing her 1/4 Midget. She could really drive, won races all over the northwest, and had 300 trophies when she quit driving. The other team driver was Mike Gregg, who had quite a career in open wheel race cars, won the Bellville Nationals in a Midget, along with some other championships.
