Yes, the original owner (Ira B. Relyea) had the accident and insurance company totaled the car. I ended up with it.
Thank goodness there were still some 40 Fords in local junk yards in those days for parts.

  4. Some cars should be customized, some should be left alone. IMO '40 coupes fit in the latter catagory.

Fun thread, here's the Filthy Forty.
The OP hasn't been on the HAMB since February!

Amusing thread. Forty, by itself, should always refer to a Forty Ford.
I personally think that over 90 percent of the "custom" improvements to a Forty do not do any justice.
The Studebaker taillights I will take exception to, because they are perfect on a 39-40. I hope to find some for one of my 39's. I cannot bring myself to do that to a Forty.
A Forty is one of the most iconic cars ever produced, and I believe that they hold much more of a "hotrod" persona than "custom".

Any '40 Ford looks good I think ... I do prefer stock though

Ya car, do as ya wish ... I will still admire it

About 99% of the time I would say a close to stock 40 coupe is what I like best, and then one like this one shows up..fantastic!

Yes, that blue 40 (above) was tastefully sectioned. Looks great.
As a side comment, the Chevron tail lights are the signature of a 40 Ford and
    should be left alone.

  11. If it ain't broke....don't fix it! The '40 Ford is one of the best designs to EVER come out of Detroit! It can't be improved upon, so don't screw up a good car! YOMV, but you'd be wrong!

  12. I'm a hot rod guy, but I could dig a '40 with skirts and a stance like @D.Conrad's 36. (I can't believe I just typed that out loud) David, that is NOT my approval to do that to your '40 coupe. It is perfect the way I saw it last time.

I was going to say “it’s hard to mess one up”, not true. There are some great customized 40 Fords out there, also several duds. The stock lines are hard to beat. Mild custom yes, really radical not so good. Just my opinion.
