I have a '52 Merc V8 that I need to find a Generator belt that will fit the gen, 2 water pumps and the crank. I don't have double pullies and the fan is mounted off the generator with a pully for the belt. I halfassed measured the pullies and its right around 55"-56" and the pullies are 5/8" wide and 5/8" deep. Where can I get this belt?
Here’s what I have done to solve this kind of problem: take an old belt of the same width and cut it. Drill a small hole in each of the cut ends. These holes should be from the outer face of the belt to the inner face. Take a piece of wire, thread it through and secure it to at one of the holes you just drilled at one end and thread the other end of the wire into the other hole you drilled but leave that end loose. Put you “expandable” belt on the various pulleys bring it snug then secure what was the loose end of the wire. Now take your model belt to a good hardware or automotive store for them to measure and get you the right belt. Did this a few times and it always worked.
Looking at Rock Auto a Delco 15515 is what they list. Gates 7515 also. That is a 51 1/2" belt they list. You are measuring around the outside of the pullies and belts don't ride out there so the actual measurement would be shorter and the width narrower.
ok hell ya I will try that but if anyone else knows where a guy can find these belts around 55"s let me know. I dont have any good parts houses around me anymore. sadness
As best I can tell from your photos and given you are running on a single pulley plane, there is no belt for that application that can be tied to a specific car and therefore there’s need to develop a measuring tool.
2nd the Farm store recommendation. Most part's stores won't carry any 5/8" V Belts over 30". I would go to a tractor supply or any dealership that specialized in belt-driven mowers or older tractor repairs. They almost universally had 5/8" belts in varying lengths. Buy 3 or 4 in the range you're looking for to save the trips back when the 1st one is wrong. Only return the wrong ones at the end. Best of luck!
So where is around here specifically? Us Knowing that might get ya headed to an outlet your unaware of.
