In the 30's Intl. formula racers chose colors to represent the nations.
Auto Union, of Germany, featured 4 wheel drive, They were not happy with the extra lbs. from the front axle. Chasing after the engineers to lighten the load, still wasn't enough.
They took a crew of men, ( with race day coming ) with sand paper, to attack the body paint.
The national racing color for Germany became silver.

My Suburban was stripped bare of two repaints on top of the original paint in the 90's.
    Still is.

  21. Do they make a durable clear coat that could show off the raw steel?

    Yes and no.

At the last company I worked for, the Marketing Group decided they wanted all of their trade show models (heavy truck suspensions) stripped to bare steel, ground, and clear coated. We did, and had a local body shop spray them with an off-the-shelf automotive urethane clear. We learned two things quickly.

    1. Urethane Clear is not designed to stick to bare steel. Adhesion was always a problem.
    2. The smallest bit of rust, flash rust, finger print rust, or what ever left behind and then cleared over quickly turned into a large rust bubble or big brown stain. The steel would actually rust under the clear, especially where it did not adhere well. Mind you, these things spent most of there lives in shipping crates or inside convention halls, never seeing any of the dirt, water, and sunlight that a car does.

After fighting the issues for a few years, we gave up, tore them apart, sandblasted and powder coated all the models.

    Clear Coat.

My 37 after scraping most of the original black paint off. It was in Houston, so had very light surface rust under the original paint that was in poor condition, can see the difference of the roof to the quarter panel I sanded IMG_20211218_142611515.jpg

Here is the Long Beach Legend when we were getting close to going to paint, the Mulholland Speedster in bare metal, my '54 leaving the old shop before it left this world, and my buddy's '32 roadster when we were on our way back from him buying it.
