Yep! I also love the sand cast finish instead of chrome look.... same with the intake. Hilborn 4-port injecter and scoop....

    Hello,

For us, it was the way to enjoy the action. So, over the years, my hearing may have taken a slight drop in specific words I am supposed to hear from across the room, car, or hanging out together. My wife says I need a hearing aid since I don’t hear 100% of the conversation. Actually, I hear perfectly well.

But, I will admit, the thing I do not hear is a small emergency beep from our roll out freezer drawer on the bottom of the refrigerator. It is built in to warn people that the roll our drawer is not shoved in all the way. It is a high pitched beep that is almost silent. I can hear it when I move my head close to the lower drawer and then it sounds like a small beeping moment.

The years of tuning high performance motors, racing at Lion’s Dragstrip, on various encounters in So Cal, and the near-ness to the drag racers firing up their motors have affected my hearing. The sounds, I am sure were happy sounds at the time and even today, when I turn up the stereo, it is a “blast from the past.” Pun intended…

If I had sound recording equipment that was not cumbersome and recorded the sounds at the time, that would be a great movie in the historical archives. As it is, a little hearing loss is acceptable in this day and age.

Being close was due to a short lens and wanting to be in the action.

    “Here’s coming at you…”

One of the rare times that my brother filmed the Lion’s Dragstrip action. I was taking a break for a nice snack and was standing at the starting line in the tower side of the dragstrip. My brother was in the stands with his friends. (sharp eyes will see a black 58 Impala in the return timing slip road… not our 58 Impala…) This place was legal as it is behind a chain link fence and next to the “protective” blast shield. Ha!

For an injected SBC motor, the FED of the Tapia Brothers was very loud.

This is actual 1959 “sound” (1959 U.S. Nationals) coming from the Paul Nicolini/Joe Mailliard Sidewinder, along with my films recorded at Lion’s Dragstrip. It is/was music for my ears...! HA!

    Hello,

There must be a similar place or places that have the original diesel 671 blowers on display, big rig truck showrooms or parts suppliers, perhaps. Our starting search parameters were to find 671 superchargers for sale in the Drag News weekly paper back in 1959. Then we scoured the local speed shops for their versions and found out that if they have them for sale in plain, but clean condition, the cost is a lot more than used.

We finally decided to go to the plentiful diesel engine/truck dealers in nearby Wilmington. It was a haven for all things big rigs. The closeness to the LA/LB Harbor area Truck transport usage locations came in handy. Those trucks are still rolling around on the streets and freeways in the same general areas, today.

What we found in 1959-60 was the cost of a new 671 was horrendous from any dealer. The second time we went to one small dealer, the salesman made us a deal we could not pass. He was changing over the whole showroom and needed to clear out the “OLD” and bring in the new. One of the OLD items was on the showroom display of a 671 mounted on a new/old diesel motor.

He could not sell the complete set up, so they were in the phase of taking off the old 671 and bolting on the latest polished unit as per 1960 showroom condition apply. Now, his shop would be up to date when a guy would walk in and ask for the latest set up for a big rig power.

Yes, that was a long time ago. We did not want to buy a used 671 blower as we did not know how it was used or abused. So, we said we would save up to get a new one. Reath Automotive said they would set up any used/new 671 blower for racing specs, which would have saved us a ton of money. So, the salesman sold us the on the showroom display 671 supercharger that was a year old, but never used. It was less than any on the market.

We had Reath Automotive take apart the 671 we just purchased and set it up for racing action. They were surprised at the new condition of the 671. It was clean, no marks anywhere, barely any washer or nut grinds on the bolt holes, either. They rebuilt it to racing specs and we were now the first ones with a new/old 671 supercharger set up for an SBC motor.

They wanted us to buy their special chain driven 671 set up, but when we told them we had a new Isky-Gilmer Belt Drive System sitting at home on our workbench, they were impressed. (thanks to our Los Angeles automotive connection…) As styles go, the majority of the race cars with 671 superchargers were left with the original finish, not highly polished or accent painted.

upload_2022-10-18_3-52-56.png A similar motor set up in 1960 Not polished, but with a smooth original finish left alone.

After months of putting the big puzzle together slowly, it was our first 671 supercharged motor build. And what a sound it made in the small backyard upon the first starting procedure !!!

Did not know he had this now. He seems to have quite a collection of fuel cars.

Glad to hear the Creitz car is back in Oklahoma. He also has one of Bennie Osborns cars and a Jimmy Nix replica.
