I have looked all over the internet and can't find the bolt pattern for a 1960 Mercury monterey. some say 5x4 1/2 and some say 5x5. I am going 225 miles to pick up a newley aquired 1960 Mercury Monterey canvertible. It has 2 flat ties, so I want to take a couple tires and wheels along so I can load it. thanks for any help.Henry
Henry, I don't know anything about these. This thread may help: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ms-anybody-making-them.1266854/#post-14664636 Had a bunch of bolt pattern banter in it. Mike
This wheel chart says 5 by 114.3. (114.3 mm = 4.5 inches . So, it it's 5 x 4.5 in. https://www.classiccollector.net/Mercury_Bolt_Patterns.htm
Enough information to be confusing. Maybe have the seller take a tape measure across the rear wheel studs and remove all doubt.
Might as well bring a tire pump too, in case the flat ones hold air well enough to load, saving the hassle of changing them.
Yup as squirrel said Hollander lists a 14x6 wheel with a 5 on 5” bolt pattern. Always believe the books before the internet
In his original post the O/P said "1960 Mercury Monterey canvertible" (that's a direct quote from it).
Thanks fellas, the car is 225 miles away and the seller is a 87 year old guy. Most people don't know how to measure wheel bolt pattern . I'm going to go with the 5x,5
Rand man- roadmaster and otaco farm wagons had that bolt pattern as did a bunch of other farm machinery. They shouldn’t have nubs for hubcaps, came in both full dish smoothy style and conventional. These were likely produced in the 70’s. If it is really important I can take pictures. I don’t know of any automotive applications.
You are always a hell of a lot better off starting a new thread when you have a question than tacking it on a thread that is actually a differeent topic and where it goes down the page where people who don't read through never see it. There are a***** ton of Ford and Mopar 14 inch wheels with 5 on 5 lug pattern floating around. Watch the center hole diameter though as while the lug pattern is the same the center hole may be different.
I would have to look but If I didn't sell them the wheels off my daughter's old 79 Mercury Monarch should have been 14 inch.
Oops so it is. These are modern-ish applications but most are larger. https://www.wheel-size.com/pcd/5x5.5/
Just to clarify: The 5 lug bolt pattern must be on a 5 1/2 inch circle. this early Ford , Ford F100 pickup and some Lincolns. I have a 1950 Lincoln. Long story, but I bought a used set of aftermarket wheels that are not right and not easy repair. I have a new set of tires and nice full wheel covers. Thought I might see if some steel wheels were available. I know Lincoln switched to 14 wheels in 1958, that trend went through 1960, but I don’t know how long it lasted. I can do my own research. Just felt like conversation.
I've never seen big Ford pattern in a 14" diameter myself. I always had to dig hard to find 15" when I was a Model A man.
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/quick-question-bolt-pattern-on-61-merc-monterey.124270/ Post #2. Best list I have seen. C9 will always be missed here......
Mentioned here before, I have a 14" ford smoothie, like the 40-66 centers. no idea what it came off, its on a home made trailer. now. Gonna break it down soon to get the 34 rear end thats under there too. will report back when its a proven thing
Yea C9 is missed for sure. When he created that - I printed it out to keep a copy of it in my truck glove box, along with one of those plastic bolt pattern gages when I go to a swap meet. Comes in handy when you need it.
I joined here too late to know him, and many others. It is humbling to be able to read and learn from the stuff these guys contributed. It sort of keeps them here with us, if you know what I mean.
