I have a 292 in my 57 f100 and a 312 on a stand waiting for a project. There will always be haters on the mighty y but I love them. I did all the oil and coolent mods Isky E3 cam and head work it has 60 psi oil presure and 185 temp always. It's no slouch either.
My dad had a 2.5 ton Ford, like a semi cab over, ‘54 as I recall. One head was off a 292, other off a 312. Go figure. He’d built a ramp bed for a ‘46 Chevy 1.5 ton truck, to haul his D4 with Dozer. He moved the bed to the Ford. No idea how much the bed weighed, but was all made from 1/4 steel. The Ford had a 5 speed transmission, I’m assuming 5th was direct, and an electric 2 speed rear. I think as my memory serves the rear was under drive and direct. It was a step up from the 292 he had put in the Chevy, but loaded (in either) you couldn’t get into the higher side of the rear. The ‘46 had a manual 2 speed rear end. Anyways, just reminiscing. But he’d have me take the Ford into town when I was 14/15 years old to gas it up before the weekend. He told me “you have a farm license”. Looking back on that I think he did it just to put me at ease when driving it. Ya know, I could load the Cat, haul it, etc without a problem, but never could figure out the 13 speed in his Pete’s. Lol
His was D4 was after the RD, I’d guess, but don’t know, never will, sometimes on the 50’s.? Maybe 60’s. But I’d have never guessed at 7 ton. He did build the dozer blade by himself, only work he paid for on it was the “clamp” pieces at the pivot points. All done with his old Lincoln arc welder. I still have the welder, don’t use it, can’t scrap it, let it take up space
