I have a friend with a very nice 56 Ranch wagon that he has had for many years. We were discussing steering conversions and he mentioned his was an 80's Mitsubshi but does not remember the specific donor car. He has been very pleased with it and said it was an easy conversion with only a needed tab welded to the frame to accommodate the third mounting hole on the box. He got the idea from a magazine article he read. The best part of the swap to me is that the u joint connection is on the engine side of the firewall and not inside. Anyone have any info on this swap?
Been years but I had heard of it. It’s was like smaller version of the borgeson box. I think it was a pickup box like 1995/98 era. I check led rockauto. It might be the older ‘92 mighty max.
There is always this: https://www.hotrodders.com/threads/electric-power-steering-install-in-a-54-ford.526435/
This has come up in the past too: https://streettechmag.com/2015/03/25/shoebox-ford-tech-installing-a-volvo-gearbox-in-a-49-51-ford/
I feel like it might be even a Toyota gearbox with an added plate. This was 90’s tech in the 90’s. To me it’s all about keeping the original column shift. But in some of these you might have to reengineer and use a cable.
My friend is sure it is a Mitsubishi box, although could also be Toyota and others. He also mentioned Mighty Max as a maybe.
