  2. Finally got around to hanging some of mine on the wall. I figure I will run across someone that needs the '32 Iowa plate at some point. :D

Cool thread. I have a bunch of old plates but they are still in a box from moving 6 months ago.

I did find this one in the back of my new project. It’s in really good condition. F871D6C2-F193-4219-A997-B8B8EA891843.jpeg

I picked this up today . The fellow I got it from said he found it buried in the dirt. He built a deer blind and one day while he was hunting he was kicking around in the dirt inside his blind and found it buried about an inch down. It has some rust issues, but the condition of the paint surprised me. IMG_20221104_002524.jpg

These plates were first issued in March of 1955. Permanent issue for $5 to cars 25 years or older(1930 model and back). From what I understand, there were 999 issued through 1957. In 58 the antique plate format changed to a standard shape and size.
It seems odd that the common plates changed format in 1957, but the antique plate did not change until 1958. Maybe they were made up ahead of time and they issued them until they were gone. Hey, after all, the feds didn't mandate standard size until 1960 issue year.

Here's a 29 CA plate I "restored" to match the age of my 5W before I found a matching set. It was covered in white house paint, in a box with about 130 others of the same vintage. I've got about 10 matching sets in the same condition. Might "restore" them similarly, and offer them here. They're 1929 thru 38/9 or so.

Thanks 37hotrod. I have been lurking since 2007 and look at the HAMB nearly everyday.

What year NC plates are you interested in? I'm always on the lookout for 1936-56 Tennessee plates, if anyone has one or many that they wanna part with.

I would be interrested in seeing a write up on how to restore these old plates.

Well, the restoration process is different depending on the condition of the plate. I've done alot of restos that consisted of a small hole patch and a repaint. I have also done some plates that were way more work.
I dug this one out of the trash at a friend's junk store. I did it just to show that it could be done. It was a lot of work, but I feel it was worth the effort. IMG_20220912_123327.jpg

  24. Picked up this 51 Virginia with 52 tab. Not the best looking, but solid and I didn't have any others like it.

  25. I have a few pre 65 plates that I wanted to post.
A pair of mint condition WA plates for my ‘56 Ford that I haven’t mounted on the car.

Also the one that’s on the car now.

A pair of CA plates that were once on my ‘63 Riviera I once owned.

And some random Oregon plates I picked up at a garage sale a few years ago.

And a CT dealer plate I found at an old junkyard in Connecticut when I was there in 1991.

I’ve got a lot of newer plates but they’re all from the 70’s and newer.

  28. Rare '28 plate from Mass. Fishermen complained loudly to the state because it showed fish swimming "away" from Mass. It got changed for '29. 20170709_093047.jpg 07092017.jpg

A small sampling. I've got them hanging in various places around the shop.
