Folks Of Interest Ed Pink's Shop to Be Torn Down (Shop Tour)

Ed will be 92 on 2-10-2023.

 

From a posting by Ed Pink is that the city will relocate the shop at their expense, and this is quite common with cities, but the story left that part out. Having a business for a lot of years in the same location, there are times one would want some change in the layout, this is a golden opportunity to do it at someone else's expense

 

I am always a few years late.

 

Very impressive, super well organized machine shop and quite a variety of new and old machines that produce quality work!
Ed's memory is pretty impressive as well!

 

YES, not only do they have to relocate him at their expense, but they have to relocate you to a 'comparable' sized shop and that includes 'vehicle traffic per day'! ,,, and that could be a pretty healthy number considering the Valley now has over a million and half folks living in that relatively small area of southern California!

I wish that this was mentioned either in the video, or earlier in the thread, before the moderators had to come in in rein-in the political commentary that started.

As I have mentioned, there is nearby space that will not only provide a similarly-sized building, but will pose little to no impact on the commute times of the workers.

Yeah, moving sucks, but I have had to move my shop 4-times since 2002. That's life. It happens, and it almost happened a 5th time, but my current landlord decided to give us a new 2-year lease.

For those that are holding back ranting solely due to forum rules, go to Google maps at that location, and start zooming out. Once you can see the mountains, where things can no longer plausibly be built, tell me where that bus terminal could go, without taking something else out.

 

This has very little to do with Ed's building but doesn't Ed's family own Pink's Hot Dogs?

Hmmmm, tough to swallow considering this business has been there 57 years. The folks adjacent could have been there 90 years, who knows. The real issue here is what we cannot talk about on here.

The real issue is the absence of any land in the San Fernando Valley that can be built on.

You guys commenting from New England states lack perspective on scale.

The city of Los Angeles, not the county, nor the metro area, has more people in it than the entire state of Connecticut.

LA County has 60% of the population of all of New England.

The LA Metro Area has more people than the smallest 15 states, combined.

All of the land that can be built on, has been built on.

Anything new means something has to go.

That had nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with physics.

I am amazed at how he remembers the year he bought every machine, when partitions were added to the inside of the building. He reminds me of my old friend Rolla Vollstedt, at 95 he could recite critical information about all the cars he built, from Track Roadsters to Indy cars, he made it to 99 ! It was also nice to see where my 6-71 was built.

 

I am 67 and have built hundreds of cars over the years and remember just about every detail on any of them. Yesterday's lunch---- not so much. lol I found the video very interesting. I have had the opportunity to meet Barris, Windfield, Boyd, Isky, Boones, Art Christinson, Bobby Alloway, Pat Ganahl, and Bill Hinze. The only one I got a chance to sit and bench race with was Bill Hinze, I had recently started teaching myself to lead and wasn't happy with my progress. He was there at the Leadsled spectacular in Davenport. He was sitting behind the Bat by himself. We started talking and he invited my wife and I to sit, and we talked almost an hour and he told me what needed to be done and how I can lead with the best of them, and an autograph tea shirt, it was a great day. That was a long video for me to watch on my phone , but as mentioned before, amazing the recollection he has on years of stuff.
But the looks and references of the engines they had, doesn’t seem the shop when moved will hit a downturn. That’s a good thing. I take it the younger fellow with him is his son?

 

If I was 92 yrs old & had to relocate all that stuff it would Kill Me!
On another note the city footing the bill to relocate all them businesses is unheard of around here. I assume that this is being done Imminent Domain. Here they just show up, hand you a check & say "Get Out".

 

He sold the business in 2008, Its not like they are kicking "HIM" out, its just brick and mortar
