Recently, I have been asked to build several Quickchanges using ¾ ton center sections and side plate adaptors to incorporate Ford axle trumpets (usually 40-48). This is a fairly straight forward operation, but the side plates are becoming hard to get and therefore the price is escalating.

The only currently available new plates are from Winters. They are beautifully done and I have built several different rear ends using them. There are 3 things that I found to be less than ideal with them. First, they do not look old school. This may or not be an issue. Second, they require either a special differential, only available from Winters, or modifications to the plates to utilize more common carrier bearings. This adds even more to the third issue, price.

The pictures below are of a stock Winters plate and one with a bearing adaptor that I fabricated.

I am looking to reproduce adaptor side plates to enable the use of early Ford axle trumpets on 11 or 12 bolt 3/4 ton Quickchange center sections. These will be virtually identical to the Halibrand H852 parts and will be available in Aluminum only at this time. The pictures below are of original Halibrand parts.

They are not interchangeable but are both machined from the same casting.

Center cases are normally one of two widths 3 3/4" or 4 3/8". Halibrand, CAE, ARC and Benson use the 4 ¾” dimension while Winters, Frankland, Coleman, Jones, Lynn, Speedway Engineering etc. are 3 ¾” The reason I make a point of this is that the narrower cases make a visually smaller rear end. All of these can be used as a basis for a heavy duty Quickchange that retains an old school look.

Good limited slip differentials can be had relatively inexpensively and easily modified to work with either case width in either 11 or 12 bolt configuration.

I am trying to gauge the market for these items. Please let me know if you are interested and whether you would be more likely to want 11 or 12 bolt plates. I will include you in a private conversation that will give you special introductory pricing.

I found a Hilabrand Quick change that my Model A bells fit but the torque tube stud holes do not match the Quick Change banjo. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Would a later model torque tube work?

No it won't. Elongate the holes in the model a torque tube.

Or turn the torque tube 30 degrees and redrill the Quicky case. I'm sure Gearhead has a solution. I've seen Sprint Car cases with 12 holes and half of those with pulled threads.

Not real easy to relocate the radius rod mount on a Model A torque tube like it is on a V8 torque tube.

Whenever I chop up a torquetube I always save the radius rod boss. If you need one I can get you one.

Bruce, I have purchased several of the Halibrand smooth side bell QC's for my projects that were so popular in the 80 & 90's. They had problems with the pull out axles failing and many were pulled out and replaced with 9" rear ends for big hp motors. I loved the look and bought all I could find, usually very inexpensive but abused. I still think they look good but the center sections are still hard to come by if you want a non-abused unit. How much of an investment would it take to make a complete Champ center and these bells with an option for the early styles? Would you need some approvals from Halibrand? I don't think so (but maybe) as they are out of business. I know the CAE units looks the same and someone in San Diego called me about tooling up to make the center and fluted side adapters. This has been a couple of years ago so I guess the market/funding wasn't there.

I do believe you have the right idea but need someone like Speedway to give you a large order for their vast worldwide distribution system. I am old and not in the business anymore but I think their would be a market to compete against Winters if you could be competitive and still generate some profit to support your hobby….just a thought.

This one came out of Vic Edelbrock's roadster that Brizio built. Vic installed one of his new high hp engines and was afraid of the unit not holding up. I used to buy these complete units from the take out shops for under a grand.
