Hot Rods Who's building a BADASS DRAG INSPIRED HOTROD?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by curbspeed, Nov 24, 2022.

  1. Since we have a long holiday weekend, I would like to see who's building a badass drag inspired hotrod. Now keep in mind. It must be chopped, blown or fuel injected. Not some run of the mill mild hotrod build. Coupe or roadster. It must be going to be body worked and plans for a killer paint job. Chrome plating a plus! Let's keep this to hotrods please. The reason I am posting this is I am gathering parts for a 1929 Ford roadster A/SR build. It will be Brookville bodied. Gifted to me by a dearly departed close friend. I'm building this car in his honor to him and his friendship to my departed father. Blown 4-71 18.JPG 456290d920ef0095d06bdfb8d31d4765-595x343.jpg 22.JPG fire fly.jpg 1955 Olds 324. Cragar drive. Fully polished. Muncie 4 speed, and 66 Bronco 9" rear. Full fenders and magnesium wheels in front and polished aluminum rare, slotted wheels in the rear with cheater Towel City slicks. Pictures of said parts will be forthcoming. This will not be some primer or patina rod (I'm so over all that) I'm going to build this car with as much detail as I can possibly muster. This will be a very drag race inspired build built for multi-purpose street and light duty strip use. Eelco themed. I am not a drag racer but have been heavily influence all my life by early 1960 drag racing having been baptized by fire at Fremont Drag Strip in about 1964-65 at a very young age, then getting hooked hard again with all the fantastic nostalgia drag racing in the late 1980's in Fremont and Seattle during the NDRA period. I'm just starting this build and continue to gather period correct pieces. Pictures will be coming soon of the parts. For the time being, I want to see similar builds, if they are out there. Who's building a badass mind-blowing hotrod/drag car? Let's post them up!!! Here are a few pictures of what I'm going for. I know there is a drag roadster thread, but this isn't about that. and moon.JPG

Please define “badass” as I don’t know what that could ever be?

  10. You guys know what I mean. Jeez. I shouldn’t have to explain it. I’m just looking for builds from guys who get it. Ha! Wicked. Badass. Whatever floats your boat. I started out with examples.

  11. Here is my drag coupe for your consideration. Was a drag car in the 60,s and still is. Already built but never really done if you know what I mean. 406, 471, and right now 2x4 set up. 59 pontiac rear, 488 gears, racing trans, known by most of the hamb. They are probably getting tired of seeing it on here LOL. WIN_20190406_17_39_35_Pro.jpg WIN_20210424_16_31_41_Pro.jpg WIN_20221105_16_19_02_Pro.jpg picture032.jpg

Not me Mad Mike I like it.
As for my comment and not to be prejudicial at all but I’d like to think of myself from an era of good-ass and never knew any of it was ever bad.

we are building this to run in a new class Quarter Master Vintage Drag Racing Class here in the U.K, the class requires the cars to look like they are from the late fifties to mid sixties era. There will be a street and comp class both running heads up. There are already a good few cars signed up including the ex-Dean Lowes Roadster pick up. Our car takes inspiration from various 34's from this period and will hopefully put us into the nines IMG_8247.JPG IMG_8244.JPG IMG_8297 2.jpg

  18. Back up top to see what you are building

  19. Thought some brothers might like to see some pictures of when I up-graded the 59 pontiac 9.3 rear. Chrome moly 35 spline axles, bearings, Trophy Trac chunk with 4.88 gears, all built by Fabcraft Metal works. Yes sir, this brother does. Thats jewelry right there. That's the only rear I use if the car's gonna get beat on. This one's under my 61 Biscayne. Narrowed 63 Pontiac. Trophy Track here too. Big thanks to Fabcraft and Mark Williams.

Sorry to thread jack. Always makes me happy to see the right axle under an old hot rod.

    @wheeltramp brian

    Hello,

No one could be more in that category than @wheeltramp brian. He found the original Herman Brothers 1929 Roadster from Itow’s Automotive and Clay Smith Cams. It was an iconic So Cal race car that was a street roadster.

It was/is unbelievable that after 64 years, it was still around, a little worn, but still recognizable. My heart was a flutter, as I was the one who filmed the Blue Roadster at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1958-59.

Wheeltramp Brian has done a wonderful job, but before it goes to the new owner, I wanted to give him some credit and many “kudos.” A great piece of local So Cal drag racing history that a lot of guys/girls still around from that time period, would remember and have a smile across their faces, like I did.

Note: partially from another post on Itow’s Automotive door painting.

One of the most popular and winning drag racers was the Herman Brothers blown Oldsmobile powered 1929 roadster… (which is now being rebuilt from Wheeltramp Brian and his great working skills… yea!)

    Then:

Clay Smith Engineering was located at 1301 W. Gaylord Street in Long Beach. It was a half mile away from our Westside of Long Beach house. The history of the 1929 Roadster was well documented in magazines and the weekly Drag News paper when the results of competition was posted from each of the dragstrips in So Cal and elsewhere. Joe Itow Automotive was front and center in this roadster build.

"The Herman Brothers, blown Olds gas burning Roadster...like many drag roadsters, it started out as a street roadster, still had the holes for the '39 Ford taillights...ran high 140s, pretty good for the time, '60-61..."

Again, what a fabulous find and history of the local racers from that era. It was a great time for us to be a teenager, hot rod enthusiast and active drag racer. This current build is exciting as the day it was seen at Lion's Dragstrip back in those early drag racing days.

It just amazes me that such a find existed. Now, it will get some of its glory and coolness back into today’s historic information. My brother would have thoroughly enjoyed this information and that the blue roadster has survived this long.

    Thanks,
@wheeltramp brian for all of the discovery, intuition, great work building and effort… We all have to give him much needed credit for such an undertaking… “good on you!”

Now, it is the new guy’s job to get the iconic Herman Brother’s/Itow’s Automotive Roadster correct for all of us to see and possibly hear at the So Cal “Nitro Revival” events in 2023 or 2024. There are plenty of So Cal racers still around and would be surprised at the showcase events.

@Barbarian is building a drag style pickup with supercharger and multiple carbs. I think that qualifies as bad ass.
