Looking for inspiration on my build… years back when I was building my roadster there was an awesome thread of model A roadster pics. Hundreds of pics. I’m looking for the same thing but with boat tail speedsters. When I search I’m just finding build threads. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! 4. Would that trailer be unsprung ? If so, would it bounce all over the place or do you run low air pressure in the trailer tires ?

Why do they call it a boat tail when it looks like a boat front, or nose? Boat tails are flat, the fronts are pointy.

Just seems like an odd name.

  10. because the rear of the car looks like a boat.....

Its the tail end of the car.
"Boat nose tail end" is too long, so shortened to boat tail.

That makes sense. Things get named and sometimes it makes you wonder how it came to be, or at least I do.

Speedsters huh? So many variations and makes but the top 2 brands that always come to mind when I hear speedster, Auburn and Packard. Enjoy.

Auburn had 3 generations of speedster. 1st was on the 29 style chassis in 2 variants, you want the big motor;)

Later on, the 32-3 was pretty damn kool and this ultimate 33 12-161 is perhaps the most rare with only 3 made before the Salon style came out.

And who isn't familiar with the icon, 1935-6 supercharged speedsters.

On to Packard, we start with the 734. Small body and chassis but a big 385CID inline 8.
    1930-packard-734-speedster-runabout-pass-rear-200x200.jpg
My ultimate Packard speedster (series 734) would be the runabout, not a boat tail.

Can't talk Packard Speedster without this, the Macaulay.
    1933+Macauley+Packard+Speedster.jpg
And the ultimate of the classic era speedsters, the 34 Lebaron V-12.

Definitely not the norm tho..... Nor is that a barrel back stern. This is a barrel back stern.

Four basic categories here. First, all manner of boat-shaped bodies derived from the French "skiff" type, dating from before 1930 or so. These were open tourers, typically featuring a separate cockpit for each row of seats. Henri Labourdette was arguably the master of the style:
    Boattail 1 Labourdette_Panhard_et_Levassor_X19_Skiff_1912_03_a97f7f7e825bb260acb8aa0b693be04d.jpg
While a skiff is an actual boat, I don't believe the term "boat tail" was ever applied to this type in their day. The wood finish on the above Panhard & Levassor makes for a rather literal skiff; it was dispensed with on the Renault below:
    Boattail 2 24_Renault-Labourdette-Skiff-DV-10-PBC_a09.jpg

Second, all kinds of putative aerodynamic tails, be they for serious competitive intent or inspired by it. These are typically open single-seaters or two-seaters, though there have been closed bodies along these lines, like this 1925 Elge:
    boattail 3 wdyci578.jpg
and this 1928 Frazer Nash, called "Owlet":
    boattail 4 Frazer-Nash-Saloon--The-Owlett--95750.jpg
Note the daylight under the offside front tyre! But again, I'm not sure anyone called a Bugatti Type 35 a "boat tail" in 1925. I believe the term became popular much later by retrospective association with the stylistic theme of the '30s, especially among American coachbuilders, which @theHIGHLANDER outlined above, and which is the third category. There is some utterly beautiful stuff there.

The fourth category comprises latter-day builds using '40s sheetmetal, especially pointed hoods, to form the rear bodywork. While I appreciate the practical aspects, the eye for form, and the creative repurposing, I must confess that the introduction of the technological language of mass-produced pressed steel into this kind of context can be a bit jarring to me, depending on how well it's pulled off.

Here's a group of boat-tail speedsters at the start line of a recent NWVS event. Blue #77 in the foreground is mine. Believe it or not, it's the same car as seen in the "before" picture posted by @ken bogren earlier today (post 22 above).

This is a late-'90s build on a 1932 Lincoln Model K, which is unusually true to the design ethos of the great American boat tail speedsters of the '30s:
