    Hello,

The history of Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse is from the late 40s to the present. During our time as older teenagers, (to the hostess, we looked like 21+++) we frequented the place when our favorite jazz guy at the time was performing. The title track from Bud Shank's Soundtrack for Bruce Brown's surf film "Barefoot Adventure" was the draw for us. It was a chance to see Bud Shank in person and enjoy those surfing moments from the film all over again.

When some of the top surf movie presenters were showing their latest, we had to drive to places like Santa Monica Civic Auditorium or other movie theaters/larger auditoriums for the big shows. The lesser known surf films were usually shown at the local high school or college auditoriums. The 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery took over the transportation to those movies after using the 58 impala for the initial early films.

Like most parts of our adventures, the car had to fit the moment and for some, the 58 Impala did not fit the image of teenage surfers. So, when the 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was used, there were a lot of admiration and acknowledgement of the “cool” surfers inside.

Our favorites from the movie being “Ala Moana” and the theme song, “Barefoot Adventure.” Being teenagers, jazz was not the most popular version of music at the time. But this movie provided us with some distancing from rock and roll, as well as rhythm/blues. The album found its way into my brother’s collection for us to fall deep into oblivion while listening at home on the old stereo player.

The sight of our surf stars surfing locations, just increased the experience in a different way. The soundtrack led us to start enjoying the smooth sounds of jazz and waves that one day we would ride in our extended road trips.

So, every chance we got when Bud Shank performed at the Lighthouse Café, we went to enjoy the live music and related it to our brains seeing those great surfing waves. It was no longer all AM music of rock and roll. Now, the tradition of jazz has grown and is a part of our concert going adventures along with rock & roll performances since 1961.

Then, later on my wife and I were able to rekindle our relationship with the actual Maître d' as he was from our old high school teenager area. That usually got us ringside seats for other big name jazz artists. Now, the jazz era was starting and has continued to this day. There is nothing better than Cannonball Adderley playing “Mercy Mercy Me”… or a performance of the Jazz Crusaders, just steps away from your seats. YRMV

The Lighthouse was instrumental in this experience…
