Man, that is KEWL to the n'th degree.
Have you tried casting with a core to make the inside hollow?

  4. Nice! Is that for a GMC 6? You mentioned “the general”.

  5. Great job. Traditional hot rodding at it's best. The intake came out great and putting your name on it will certainly have some people wondering who is that manufacturer.

As the old HAMB metallurgist, if you are getting more serious you may want to actually use aluminum casting alloys as opposed to some recycled scrap castings. Only because the consistency and specific alloying can help the casting quality and get better results. For stuff like small tag toppers, plaques and similar the scrap can work. But once you get to more intricate designs and repeatability having the same metal will benefit you.

Wouldn't that be exciting!....I'd be a tik tok star with my dance moves.

    A GMC 302 military motor

    That's for a 250 / 292 Chevy

I did , you can see my core pattern and mold in my photos

    Yeah , its a GMC 302

At the moment it is just a hobby I' not doing this commercially. I do have some porosity and gas bubbles but they are minor. I liked the scene from the movie 'The worlds fastest Indian' where Burt Monroe is casting his own pistons and he talks about melting old chevy pistons because they are the best.

Either a 230/250/292 Chevrolet or possibly a Pontiac OHC six. The two are quite similar.

This is impressive beyond words. What are you gonna do for an encore? Maybe a clone of the Moonliner shown in your avatar?! Looks like the spirit of Dean Moon is alive in you.

  13. Excellent work! Those patterns are neat!
I signed up for a metal casting course at night school a few years ago, had some fun and cast a few things in my shed (mostly aluminium). We had to have a "project" to complete , one in brass and one in cast iron, so I made my '36 windscreen posts.

    Very nice work.
When I got to do the "Hot Metals" classes/time in collage eons ago, that was one class that was fun - the whole time.
    Hope to have a small home-foundry someday. :) .

That's amazing! I have to admit when I first read the thread title, I was expecting the worst. Please share pics when installed on the Jimmy. I have a GMC 270 in the works, love me some GMC inlines.

What type of flux did you use? Salt and KCI or something else?

I've used several different homemade fluxes and degassers and lately I just skim the dross and pour , no flux. My pours seem to go better when I pay attention to the temperature . I try and pour between 1300 and 1350 using a non contact pyrometer.

    Hey, Jethro;
Sounds like the next step is to locate a large amount of the Mag lawnmower decks & re-pour the parts in Mag. Think of the weight-savings... :D .
Then... rocker covers, then wheels, then... :D .

Yeah , um I'm a bit chicken about trying Magnesium....it burns real good!
At Bonneville years ago they would throw a VW block on the fire , they say you could probably see it from space. I've only seen the mag ribbon burn in science class and it was impressive

I machined some parts out of magnesium a long time ago. We took the chips and lit them. BIG flames.

Titanium shavings do the same as magnesium. Very bright flame and super hot!
